Limericks From The Garden

Updated on September 23, 2014

Demas finds limericks a challenge and has crafted a few that even have chuckles. Of the bunch you can choose from he offers this latest one

A Cantaloupe Limerick

I carefully counted the cantaloupe,

I raised with seeds from an envelope.

Nine nearly ripe there on the vine,

With two youth not so carefully spyin'..

Not surprisingly today two did elope.

Now you see them,;now you don't!

There once was a melon so ripe....

There once was a melon so ripe

I think that you know the type:

grown in the sun,

and not just for fun,

Except for the two they did swipe.:

when it's dry, it takes water, LOTS of water!

There once was a man who was broke....

There once was a man who was broke,

and wanted to eat artichoke.

He'd suffer and sweat

for some money to get;

and share what he bought with his folk.

{I know, it's supposed to be funny, but the funny thing actually is, that that is what all us patriarchs do!]

There once was a man used to teasin'....

There once was a man used to teasin'

who loved to garden and reason.

He'd hoe even when it was hot;

not worry even if it was not,

For he'd "Ho, ho, ho!" any season

Humor can be found everywhere, if we look, and looking for it makes life that much more enjoyable.

shraddhachawla - Thanks, enjoyment is what I write for, especially when it involves limericks. I write them, but in the process I get to enjoy them, too.

snakeslane - Now that you've broken the ice, is it time to take the plunge? Great first effort, and they become more fun to write as you go with the flow of their rhythm. How about another one?

Love your sense of humor. A true writer can find inspiration anywhere, and you just proved it.

      Hi Perspycacious,

I think I've written only one limerick on Hub Pages, and that was for Paraglider in response to his How to write a Limerick Hub, but here it is:

      How to write a Limerick

I thought I would sure like to try

But my efforts are making me cry!

      Though I shouldn't care

      If the feeling is there,

and the humour is reasonably wry.

Ericdierker - Cucumbers, Zucchini, Tomatoes, Pole Beans, Onions, Potatoes, Green Peppers, Jerusalem Artichoke, and the Cantaloupe are still coming in from the garden, not to mention the apples galore....it's a bountiful, but busy season.

Wonderful for a good chuckle and so timely with all the melons and gourds coming ripe.

WritingInRichmond - I corrected the typo ("splyin'") to make it a little clearer. Darn those typos. Catching them is sometimes as hard as catching eloping cantaloupe! Thanks for your high praise, too.

snakeslane - It's nice when another limericker likes your limerick enough that they wish they had written it. That's high praise. With thanks from me.

This is a wonderful collection of limericks with a generous amount of humor and wit! I too love to garden and I had chuckle at the eloping cantaloupe. Well done!
