Lines to cross

Updated on January 28, 2010

From freedom to captivity.

Before you there was no horizon
No way to calibrate up or down
I danced through boundaries
Unaware of their existence

Then you were there with your lines
Determined by your pen, they cut into my flesh
Suddenly there were lines to cross and lines to draw
And freedom was blurred beyond them

Now I sway on the line you have drawn
How close I feel to slipping into your right or wrong
You drew them so close to me your pen deciding my fate
Forgetting what captivity would do to me

They feel to me, so menacing and final
Like returning to a bleak place from utopia
And before this day I was dancing, running across the maps
Now I can hardly breathe for fear of stepping on your lines…

This is a wonderful evocation of the claustrophobia of captivity and the sadness of the loss of freedom. The last two lines especially capture this whole sense.

      Thanks for sharing.

      Love and peace
