Live in present moment

Shaloo Walia is an astrologer and tarot reader. She is an Art of Living teacher and also an ardent Krishna devotee and a follower of ISKCON.

Here, now…

This moment , this present moment

So transitory, so impermanent

Gone even before I blink my eyes!

Yet I keep oscillating between past and future

Like a pendulum, not stopping for a second.

Little do I realize that this moment is all I have,

This present moment to be happy!

Here, now…

Not in the past glories nor amidst the future worries,

This moment, this very moment

Gone with the snap of my fingers!

Yet I keep looking here and there

Like a deer wandering in search of musk

Being oblivious of the joy inside me

Waiting to sprout and shine.

Here, now…

Whether happy or blue, accept and embrace

This moment, this inevitable moment

Gone forever and just a memory of the past!

Wake up and see, my dear

This moment, this present moment is all you’ve got

No past , no future but this moment

To be happy, to be in bliss, to rise and shine!

Thanks for this very valuable message: "This moment, this present moment is all you’ve got." We cannot be reminded too often.

thanks MsDora! We often forget to enjoy the present moment because we are too busy shuttling between the past and the future.

Beautiful, Shaloo. It reminded me a story of a boy.

Johnny was a very lively little boy and everyone loved him. But he had one weakness – he could never live in the moment. He never learned to enjoy the process of life. When in school, he used to think of playing. When playing, he to used think of summer vacation and was constantly daydreaming. One night, a fairy approached him and said he could make any wish 3 times. He wished to bunk his class and play for the entire next day. His wish was fulfilled. Well, how much else could he play… he finally got tired and asked the fairy to make him older. He again grew tired from work and his fiancé left him. He asked the fairy to make him further old. Now he was in his 80’s when old age and ill health struck him. His wife passed away. He children abandoned him. He wept and wept. He then yelled in grief for the fairy to come. The fairy came. He begged the fairy to flip back the pages of his life. He wanted to live his childhood and wanted to cherish each and every stage of his life. The fairy nodded and fulfilled his wish. The next morning he woke up, he saw himself in his old form – a school going kid. He learnt his lesson that living in present is called the art of living.

      Very well written poetry!

Thanks Surabhi for going through my poem and sharing this lovely story here! 'Living in the present moment' is a lesson which I have learnt from my spiritual master and believe me, this has been life transforming for me.
