Living Like the Last Days

Updated on October 3, 2011

As you get older

every day I spend with you

I treasure as the last

forever grateful

of our time together.

Coming home

I can’t wait to hear

the tinkle of your bell

the softest whine for food

forever sweet and demanding.

Never want to stop to hear

your soft purrs

endless licking

teeth ripping up of the carpet.

I never tire of

endless meows

as you squirm to get free

letting me know

you can walk yourself,

the noisy scratching

claws up the bed

no longer able to jump

to proud to use your steps.

We have an understanding

you and I

our time is drawing near

love is cherished

small squabbles quickly put aside

forgiveness comes easy

always ending in a smile and warm caress.

However much longer we have

I am blessed

to have the chance

to live as if every day is the last

loving as if I have never been hurt

enjoying like I will never have the pain of losing you,

if only people could live this way.

I had my kitty for 19 years so I fully understand your sentiment. Now I have a beagle - what a difference - but she is soooo loving and cute!

@ Joyce Moriones Thank you. I don't do well in the getting money part of hubpages, you have to get a ton of readers to make any money.

@ Rosemay50, LailaK, and ktrapp ~ thanks for your kind words, i love my kitty so much.

I loved the whole poem, but the last line added a lot of impact. Cherish your kitty. They're the best!

So sweet and poignant. My kitties are getting old and more affectionate. Nice poem.
