Longer Days And Shorter Sleeves

Updated on April 11, 2013

Longer Days And Shorter Sleeves

So long there has been,

The strongest desire,

To shed the mass,

Of the winter’s weighty attire.

I prayed for less gray,

For varied colors, more green.

I craved more than was offered,

In a cold winter’s scene.

In winter it’s the,

Cold, snow, and ice, we rely on.

But we can dream of the yellow,

Adorned by the lowly dandelion.

The first sign of lasting warmth,

Comes with hardly a thrill,

But for me, I cherish,

The common daffodil.

Perhaps we busy ourselves,

And lose our focus,

As other flowers spring up,

Like the tulip and the crocus.

The first bobbin’ Robin,

Is a beautiful thing,

Searching for breakfast,

Then taking wing.

As a harsh winter dies,

No-one grieves,

And most will rejoice,

For longer days and shorter sleeves.

The Coldest Winter I Ever Knew

It was the coldest winter,

I ever knew.

Gales of frigid air,

Were all that winter blew.

And so I flew,

Into life’s harsh headwind.

I flew into the mountains,

To a colder winter’s den.

The coldness tempered my being,

Through my skin and every bone.

The glow, the warmth, the light,

Seldom flickered, seldom shone.

Frozen were hearts,

In that harshest winter,

Stinging like a barbed, rusty,

And frozen splinter.

Frozen hearts beat slowly,

Or not at all.

In the harshest winter,

That I can recall.

Awesome and beautiful, just like your heart, Micky.

Winter is still with us here in the far North of England. This didn´t stop me from loving your poems. Both are a very welcome read for me today.

I´ve just got back from 2 weeks on my lovely island visiting my son and old friends.

Really nice. Up and shared. I'm not a fan of rhyming poetry, but I think these worked really well. Nice job!

Longer days and shorter sleeves! What a beautiful word picture you paint, Micky, with those few words.

A perfect description. We have had a long winter this year, too. It now seems to be coming to an end.
