Love is a four-letter word - A Poem
The early glow of teenage love that grew within our hearts
Was birthed in dreams of better things and never more to part
No matter what life brought our way we knew we'd always cope
When asked to spell our youngest love, we'd always spell it HOPE
As time went on we learned to put the other's feelings first
To set aside our selfish pride and see our partner's worth
To seek to bring our lover joy became our way to live
When asked to spell that stage of love, we'd always spell it GIVE
Our family grew and soon we knew what joy a child could bring
Two sons with smiles and laughter shone a light on everything
Our neat and tidy home became a minefield filled with toys
When asked to spell parental love, we'd always spell it BOYS
Trials came and trials went, life brought its many tests
But through them all, both large and small, we chose to think the best
We never doubted in our love, nor questioned whys and hows
When asked to spell the harder years of love, we spelled it VOWS
The busy-ness of life and all the trappings that it holds
Can try to steal from time alone as all so surely know
We learned a lesson early we embraced before too late
When asked to spell how love was kept, we always spelled it DATE
Twenty years have come and gone, our love has proven true
We've learned the lessons God has brought as we were passing through
We've had our times of heartfelt joy and shared our times of hurt
But through it all we found that love has always been spelled WORK
