Love under the Stars on a Summer Night

“You think we should be heading to the party?” Anna said, breaking the silence that enveloped us as we lay side-by-side on the beach.

I didn’t think much about the party. Instead, I was enjoying the moment, staring at the clear summer night sky and all the glory that it brought. I really didn't want to move or think about other matters.

This was our third date and we were supposed to show up at her cousin’s birthday party where she was to introduce me to the family.

“Dan?”

“Yeah.”

“Do you think we should be leaving for the party?”

“They’ve probably called it a night.”

She rolled over and faced me. Even in the darkness I can see the light of the moon bounce of her eyes.

"Right now, in this place, this is where I want to be: You and me, under the stars.”

“They’d be really disappointed if we…”

I put a finger to her lips. The goal of going to the party was long gone. I didn’t care to meet them just yet. To me, the night was almost complete; I had a lonely stretch of Central California beach that was far away from the harsh encroachment of the city lights. I had billions of stars shining down on me. And, I was with Anna. There was nothing else I could ask for.

“You know something?” I whispered. “Right now, in this place, this is where I want to be: You and me, under the stars.”

“I thought you said you didn’t care for that mushy stuff.” She replied as she put her hand on my chest.

“I lied,” I said after a pause. “This moment is too perfect for you and me to pass up.”

I felt like I was in a universe all to myself. The outside world didn’t matter.

Anna made her move. She laid her head on my chest; I felt -- and heard --her hard, anxious breathing flow onto my chest. I was just as nervous as she was. My heart pounded on the sternum like a caged animal trying to get out yearning to run wild on this particular summer night.

We embraced each other and affirmed our budding passion for one another. This time it was me who let out an anxious breath. If I had not been relaxed before that, I was now. I felt a sense of peace come over me.

I felt like I was in a universe all to myself. The outside world didn’t matter. I was one with that universe above us And there, on the beach. we were our own shining stars burning white hot.

That was the moment, I knew, Anna was mine for good. And no party or relatives really mattered; that night, we owned the beach. We owned the night. We owned the stars. We owned each other’s heart.

for Amy...
