Lover’s Lament

Updated on January 11, 2013

They were made for each other

Or so everyone said

It began as fondness

And turned into full blown love

As time went on

Their love began to grow

And they knew that

They’d be together forever more

Their kisses were passionate and fiery

It was a love

Full of exploding fireworks

And love all through the night

They were the envy of many

The only mistake he ever made

Was that he never told her

He wanted her to stay

As one season changed to another

Their love continued to blossom

He wasn’t a man who knew

How to respond in kind

As they came together

In flames of passion

She would breathlessly

Say how much she loved him

His responses were less expressive

Because he figured that the love they shared

Was all that mattered

And their love would go on

Came the summer

And there were passionate

Picnics on sun wept beaches

And love expressed under the moon above

As autumn swept in

And leaves changed color

The flowers wilted

He realized that his love was wilting as well

He thought that as long as their love continued

She would be his for evermore

So he wined and dined her

And it seemed so fine

As winter drew close

After the love they shared

With each light dawning

He heard her softly sighing

Then one morning as the first snowflakes fell

He awoke to an empty bed

His love had flown

Because he hadn’t known how to say,”I love you.”

Regrets they were many

And the sorrow in his heart was heavy

Long winter nights spent in regret

And reflecting on memories that could have been

Gypsy - I am sharing this once I am done commenting.

Such an insightful message. How said that the three most beautiful words in the English language are, for some the most difficult to utter.

I also thought it quite prophetic that you chose a song with a video from the movie "Message In A Bottle". Very similar.

      Great job

Amazing writing! Yes, must say the words or . . . I don't understand if one loves, why one cannot say the three simple but profound words?

Thanks Gypsy for another great poem as always.

Great tale. Very beautiful and heartfelt. Just a question (interested): would a "great" love end like this?

Wishing you all a great weekend.

      Glad you enjoyed this xkamronx.

Glad you enjoyed this Beckie. I agree some people just can't profess their love and it only takes but three words. That movie and Ghost. Remember in Ghost she would say to him I love you and he's say ditto and then he died. That movie always makes me cry. Thanks for the share.

      Glad you enjoyed this Isaac.

      Glad you enjoyed this btrbell.

So very true Faith and I've known quite a few who just can't get those three words out. That's why I'm not with any of them. Thinking back on things sort of inspired this. Thanks for the vote and share.

Well Martin I think that in real life he would suffer through the winter. Probably practice saying those three little words that mean so much and come spring go get that girl and tell her a hundred times. Perhaps inspiration for another hub is on the way.

      Glad you enjoyed this Jon.

You did another wonderful job here and what should be so easy, becomes so overblown and difficult, what a shame for those who cannot share their feelings. Up, interesting and beautiful.

Great poem, Gypsy. Some men are quite clueless, as this man seemed to be. We woman need to hear we are loved, so we don't feel we are just being used. You put it in great context and such poetic form. Thanks for sharing it with us. I voted it up and awesome!

Great poem, so sad that a relationship ends over 3 little unspoken words. Men just don't seem to realise just how important those 3 little words are.

They were very much in love and together for 20 + years ands as she says ..."still counting"..... very beautiful writing my dear ! Makes me think of them !

Very beautiful. The message is taken.Being fugitive from feelings is not good,we should express them freely to the ones we love.Sometimes, a girl needs only to hear I LOVE YOU to stay.I voted up.

So glad you enjoyed this CyberShelley. They either regret and learn to say those three simple words or they remain alone. Thanks for the vote.

Glad you enjoyed this Gwen. So true you either express your love or your destined to be alone. Thanks for the vote.

Indeed Maria. However the saddest part is that it happens too often in real life. Thanks for the vote. Hugs.

That's what inspired this Rosemay. Remembered an unfortunate relationship which ended because the guy just couldn't say I love you.

So right Vellur. When we have love before us we must nurture it and treasure it because life is not forever. Thanks for the vote.

Don't know why but some people just seem to be scared of such simple expressions of love. Thanks for the vote.

      Glad you enjoyed this Sunnie.

Aw thank you for sharing such a wonderful story Ed. That is so wonderful, sad and romantic all at the same time. I know he'll be with her until they meet again. Memories are precious. Sending you lots of love and hugs.

So right James. I takes so little to keep a love going and it can be so important. Thanks for the vote.

That's so true Barbara. As the years go by the more you long to hear it.

So important to say 'I love you!' Some men unfortunately consider the uttering of these words beneath their dignity. Only saying 'I love you' without proving it with indisputable deeds of love, is another common sin committed by so many. Fortunately at present I have nothing to complain about :)) Beautiful, Gypsy!

Yes, tell her that you love her every day. I do think women really need to hear it often. Don't take each other for granted ever. Time has a way of offering new paths for life to take.

You are so right starstream and the men who can't ever say just three simple words are always the losers. It's so wonderful when two people can share their love for one another.

    • greencha profile image

greencha 4 years ago from UK

errrmmm... well I am a great believer in equality. Women have fought

for decades for that ,and still are to an extent. Now they have already nearly got it, isn't it hipocritical to still expect that it should always be the man to say,'' I love you darling',and buy HER the flowers? What's wrong with the reverse being the case now and again. I know lots of women who find it hard, ( even impossible), to tell their 'man' , ''I love you''

    • Gypsy Rose Lee profile image
      Author

Gypsy Rose Lee 4 years ago from Riga, Latvia

Well in the case of my poem here she kept expressing her love and he never replied in kind nor did he tell her that he wanted her to stay. So in this case she just moved on to someone who could express love much better. Of course there is the other side of the coin where women don't express love when they should it does work both ways. I don't see that things that have been true for centuries can be changed so quickly however I don't see anything wrong with a women buying a man things like flowers but men don't usually expect or want such things or do they? Well one way or another love has got to be a two way street greencha.
