Loving a Memory

Updated on September 17, 2014

He was happy and content

Even though he missed her

Day in and day out

A tragedy had taken his love

But she was everywhere he looked

In the spring and summer

All the flowers

Reminded him of her perfume

The orange glow of sunsets

The fiery embers of her red hair

Bright blue skies of summer

How her blues eyes had sparkled

The stars that glowed in the sky

Made him think of her smiles

As the dark days of autumn and winter came

He knew she’d be there beside him

Quietly he’d feel her hand in his

He’d hear her whisper that her love was true

Alone but content to have her near

He went on loving a memory

Now as the years had flown

And he sat all alone

He looked forward to the autumn days

When she’d come to him

He sat on their park bench

And watched as the wind swirled the leaves about

He looked all around

But this autumn she seemed nowhere to be found

It made him sad to think

That she’d remain forever a memory

That her spirit had gone away

He wondered how he’d go on

Never feeling or seeing her again

Waiting just to be with her

When his time on earth was done

He couldn’t help it

He was loving a memory

Then his breath caught

As he watched a woman approach

For a moment he thought

That she had returned to him once more

The woman sat beside him

She seemed so familiar

As she turned and sadly smiled at him

It was her eyes that had a familiar gleam

He wondered what to say

But then he heard her draw in her breath

She told him that he reminded her

Of her husband

The love of her life

And how he had passed away

Some months ago

It sounded odd to him

To hear her say

That it was looking at him

That made her think he’d come back again

Then he told her of his surprise

At seeing her before

He told her all about loving a memory

Then they looked at one another

It seemed as if they already knew

They had two guardian angels

Who had brought them love anew

They would forever be loving a memory

But together it was easier to bare

Finding a new true love

Throughout the years to share

With each anniversary

That came they sat

On the bench

Drank champagne

And toasted to the skies

And to one another

Delighting in the love they shared

Rasma, your poetry has taken on that of a story-teller. You have a gift and I hope you continue to share your gift with the world. We need poets like you to keep love alive and beauty of the soul shining it's light.
