Loyalty Deferred

Updated on May 2, 2014

"You stand up for your teammates. Your loyalty is to them. You protect them through good and bad, because they’d do the same for you." Yogi Berra

"There is no friend as loyal as a book." Ernest Hemingway

Loyalty is a mirage

of expectations unfulfilled

broken visions of unity

shattered trust

and blurred lines.

Trust is a waste

of feelings and time

with everyone selling you out

taking the easy road

without a thought.

Convenient friendships

rule the world

of needs one-sided

support forgotten

or rather never given

decisions made

without a care or worry

of what others go through

or whose feelings are hurt.

Reality lies

within a sea of selfish desires

of immediate wants

where friendship and history fail to matter.

I remember when I was a kid. All we cared about was playing ball and hanging around outside. Makes me wish that I could return to those days, BUT at least I have nature!

It does seem it is a mirage these days. It seems too many people do not have the ability to trust enough to remain loyal.

Yes, this is certainly a sad reality in today's world for many. I love your title and your poem is great as to that reality. Love your quotes too. Expressed very well.

I'm afraid this has become the sad reality of much of the world today. Greed, lies has become the normal. Interesting write, voted up.
