MLA (Modern Language Association) Formatting Guideline

Updated on August 27, 2011

MLA is an abbreviation for Modern Language Association, which is founded in 1883 by scholars and teacher. MLA is a documentation that is commonly used in English and Foreign Language. The style can be used in summary, essay, article, paragraph, stories and many more. According to the book and personal study, it speak about the MLA formatting guidelines such as “block quotation, citing books, sources, parentheses citation, abbreviating reference…etc.” In the MLA Guide, it say that the research paper must be doubled space and the margin must be 1” spaced all around the text paper which includes: up, down, and side to side; font should be “Times New Roman .” Each paragraph should be ½ indent from the left margin and headers should be numbered through out the pages on the right hand corner of each page.

MLA format is very important to writing as well as the APA format. MLA format is being used throughout business field and medical field, whether you type for your boss or doctor. These are the format that are being used everywhere. Believe it or not, we used this on our cover letter and resume as well.

In the MLA Guideline book, it doesn’t only speak about how to format it but it also speak about plagiarism. Plagiarism is stealing somebody or someone ideas and work. I am a true believing that if you steal someone works and make it your own words per words, your not lying to anybody else but yourself. That is, you are not cheating anyone else but yourself.

Since we know and understand the MLA format, let speak about writing. If I am to considering other ideal of writing that would be tutoring, practice, and free write. According to the information that was given directly from my instructor, they speak about English tutoring at some colleges and I believe that we should take advantage of that because this will help us gain the process of writing. As a self-published author, I do still have problem with my writing and this include past tense, present tense, and some run on including grammar. Sometime I rushed through my writing and haven’t caught my mistake until someone else catches it. Sometime as I look at my own writing, I think it is okay and not a problem but to other people they see the mistake. Always proofread and have someone read it. To become a good writer, it takes lots of practice. Practice! Practice! Practice! Because practice makes writing better!

The most important advice that I would like to give you is that every writing must have critiques. Don’t be mad if the judges say your writing have mistake. Instead, be thankful because this is absolutely perfect to better your writing. I don’t get mad if someone tell me my mistake, but I do get mad if someone say my writing suck, awful…etc. Why? Because they are judging and not telling me what is my mistake. Just like your putting make up on for instant, if I wear my eye shadow wrong and someone tell me your eye is ugly, is your feeling going to be hurt? Of course, but if this person come to me and tell me, hey Chanroth, you wear your eye shadow wrong, it should be this this and this therefore, I learn my mistake. Just like holding an instrument for instant, if someone tell me your stupid because you can’t hold your instrument right! That isn’t going to help me much instead it get my feeling hurt. Instead of telling me I’m stupid and hold my instrument wrong, show me and tell me how to hold my instrument right so I can correct them and learn from my mistake. This is why we need teacher!

Free writing is also a way to help you improve your writing technique. When you free write on a journal or on a website, especially on sites that include networking and so on, people that follow you well help you find your mistake. I can’t guarantee that people will come forward to show you your mistake but continue writing anyways and take extra English class so that when you come back to your old entry, you will learn your mistake by that. For instant, I been writing essay, poetry, and story since 2003. I have about 30 spiral notebook that I have written and kept it in a box. After many years past and my knowledge expand, I look back into my old entry. I found lots and lots of mistake. And what does this tell me? It tells me I’m learning.

In conclusion, MLA format is one of a useful technical writing that is being used throughout world wide. It is being formatted with doubled space, 1”margin throughout the page, ½ indent, citing books, citing quotation, and adding reference to your essay or reports. There are many resource out there that can help each one of us improve our writing skill and this could be any way from tutoring, pre-writing, proofreading, freelancing, or taking more English Class. I hope that my information that I have provided help improve and provide you some resource within the MLA format and how to better your writing.
