Make Money Writing: Beyond HubPages
Launch a Web Site with your writing
So many Hubbers are looking to supplement their income with writing opportunities beyond the confines of Hubpages. While this community is a great place to write what you want and perhaps earn some money in the process, there are other online writing opportunities that can generate real income and supplement the work you are already doing here (cross pollination).
What is the Business Model
I own and run a few websites that cater to parks and recreational areas. These sites are currently generating traffic and providing me with some light recurring income. To be clear, I am not getting rich from these sites, but I am also not exploiting them to their full advantage yet. As these sites mature, and continue to move up the ranks in Yahoo and Google (I have moved to 6th place for my primary key word), I will be able to develop several income streams that I simply haven’t yet explored. For instance, my sites are far more comprehensive in terms of covering not only the parks, but the surrounding areas and attractions. As a result, I am able to provide leads for hotels, cabins, restaurants, etc. at no charge. I am beginning to develop relationships with the merchants in the area, and in time, they will see ever increasing value in my sites. At that point, I can offer direct purchase ads, lead generation services, and enhanced descriptions and site placement. Based on the traffic I am generating, it is reasonable that these sites could each produce a few thousand dollars per year each. The beauty is that these sites can be easily replicated for other travel destinations, and once the initial work is finished, maintenance is no more than a few minutes per day.
What is the Cost
You may be thinking to yourself that you don’t have the skills to launch you own website, but you really don’t need significant skills. I am using a Content Management System (CMS) that was free. I used an offshore developer to design my template, and I paid other writers to help contribute to the site. My total cost for fairly large site was about $300. That said, you can handle all of your writing and use a standard template to start, so your costs would be nothing more than hosting charges. You can literally launch for almost nothing.
Find yourself a topic of interest, as an example, a great travel destination, or even your home town, and begin writing “brochures” about area attractions. Find a niche to fill and build 30 to 50 pages of content. For purposes of your site, you really only need 250 – 300 words per page, so it isn’t terrible difficult. Once you have your material, you are ready to host your site, and launch. I will offer additional hubs to help you with that, but first, find you niche topic, and start writing.
Stay tuned, for more information on how I did it.
