What I Couldn't Say

Updated on August 26, 2014

I am sorry

that we were no longer close

broken trust

caused me to push away

for no reason

more than to protect myself

rather than to punish you.

I do remember

a more innocent time

when I did trust complete

my heart was open

the laughter genuine.

Times when you told me

we had all seen worse

the hiring of fools and damn fools

was the way it goes around here

that they don’t stay

and I don’t have to worry.

You had seen it all

been through many rough times

this time no different

a passing bump

in an ever long road.

Remember the time

the bus broke down 4 times

and we weren't all getting along.

Remember the times

we sang and marched

all around the world it seemed

always the same crew.

Remember when

you told me stories

of people I didn't know

until I knew them well.

Now that you are gone

we never had a chance

to get back to where we were

that time of innocence

before the feelings got hurt

and it all got changed around.

There was a love

that was always there

underneath any harm

that could have been done.

I am sorry that I couldn’t tell you once more

that we are friends

always

no matter what

someone you could count on

if you really needed me.

Goodbye my friend

hope you are someplace happy

where there is no pain

and you have love all around.

Maybe I will see you again

in this place

and I can say

hello my friend

once more.

A round of applause to you and all the poets on HP. We need many more beautiful poems in the world today to counteract the ugliness. Well done.

Hmm, if only we could have do-overs. But once that last grain drops through the passage of the hourglass we can only step into the next hour with a better grasp on lifes experience.

I love this poem. It's beautiful, but it's very sad at the same time. You have described the feeling of loss very well.

Lost friendships can leave such a hole in life. You have explained it well in your poem. Thanks for sharing.

I am a firm believer that we all will be reunited one day. Loss is only temporary.

I love to "play" remember when with pleasant memories. Even in a friendship gone bad, the good memories still bring a smile.

I like that there is a sense of hope at the end, even if it is only a glimmer

This is a really well written poem. Love the words you used and the pacing of it.

A really nice hub. It reminds me of a letter saying goodbye. The memories and thoughts were real and yet sad that it ended without a goodbye.
