Uninvited My Alanis Morrisette

UNIVITED-Alanis Morrisette

Like anyone would be
I. am flattered by your fascination with me
Like any hot-blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave

But you, you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight

Must be strangely exciting
To watch the stoic squirm
Must be somewhat heartening
To watch shepherd meet shepherd

But you, you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight

Like any uncharted territory
I must seem greatly intriguing
You speak of my love like

You have experienced love like mine before

But this is not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight

I don't think you unworthy
I need a moment to deliberathe♣♥

Notes: Just sharing you this song, when i listen,it makes me unwanted to cry when I'm experiencing pain, the sound and vocals, drums & trumpet are high,an orchestra..The song was in 2006 .I've always like Alanis songs & lyrics specially this one.. Now i got the chance to bring all my favorite music again just to ease my pain..And I've got interested on the lyrics of this one,,

I researched some of the pointed lines to try  to understand this song..

1)STOIC (stōik)

Adjective- pertaining to the school of philosophy founded by Zeno, who taught that people should be free from passion, unmoved by joy or grief, and submit without complaint to unavoidable necessity.

2)UNFORTUNATE (-fôrc̸hə nit)

  1. having bad luck; unlucky
  2. bringing, or coming by, bad luck; unfavorable

SLIGHT

  1. light in form or build; not stout or heavy; slender

transitive verb- to do carelessly or poorly; neglect

UNCHARTED- not marked on a chart or map; unexplored or unknown

From my personal reflection...There are two great characters here who are entirely indifferent from each other. Two people who has two different worlds,One who's craving to come into her world, one who wants to treat her safe & sound, one who's innocent & pure. But her world might be beyond or below from his world, one who judge by all,no rules & bounds.uncharted territory to survive,..an unfortunate slight. Both are fascinating worlds..So amazing this lyrics is..

you can share your thoughts on this!

Well, my interpretation of this song is that she had been in a deep enduring relationship that ended and this guy watched her and is fascinated in all the love and sacrifice she had given in her past relationship (stoic squirm=enduring great pain but appears normal bearing), and that he pursued her wanting to feel that love she could give during that time that the woman was just looking for an object to deter her lonliness. Then it turned out he is somewhat special that scared the hell out of her falling again...

I think she was into a gay guy. By shepherd meet shepherd.

I recall an interview Alanis did many years ago talking about being sexually abused as a child/teen hence the anger undertones of her first album. Reading the lyrics with this in mind it is makes sense.

As a young girl she has a relationship with an older man that is inappropriate. She craves an object-- (older man) and she is the uncharted territory for him.

They both know it is wrong but she is coerced by his experience. After some time the man tries to come correct and say it wrong (not allowed) and the love between them isn't real.

Then she is told to keep the occurrences secret and remain 'stoic' about it for her telling of the relationship could be damaging for both. She must---deliberate.

The arrangement of the lyrics are brilliant and her vocals are extremely powerful.

The instruments in the song are just "off the chain" excellent. Love the orchestra/rock and roll sound.

I envisioned her words to be all Alannis talking to the Man or Angel .When she discovers the angel is destined for matters of the World and not her - Alannis pours out - Go away - Your uninvited . Stoic squirm refers to maybe the all too used defense of stoic-break down to squirm. Shepherds to shepherds - Angels are shepherds - Theme being the Human Woman -very strong -- reveals she can live without this man-angel . Uninvited- Love like hers before signifies a man who loves way too many women. Course only alannis Knows.

This was written for the movie City of Angels Where Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage fall in love. The only problem is he is an angel literally not of this Earth. She is human. The verses switch as to who is speaking in 1st person. When she is talking it is in regards to the human side of her wanting him yet it not being allowed due to the rules of Angels and humans not allowed to fall in love (according to te movie). The verses where he is speaking is when he is referring to watching the "stoic squirm" which is himself as an angel. In the end he had to "deliberate" on his choice to become a human to be with her and then that's when the movie takes a twist.

In this case you want the noun form of SLIGHT: a snub, a deliberate oversight, an insult

I think that she's talking with some guy she had a one-night-stand but he (as opposed to her) became an unfortunate slight (an unfortunate small detail, mistake). It's not that he isn't worthy, but he is not welcome in her life (not allowed and uninvited). These lyrics are awsome Alanis!!! Thks so much!!!!
