Do not be scared child,
Mama says it will be okay.
Just don’t open your eyes.

Someone created a monster
with lies for teeth and rage for hands.
Do not be scared child.

The monster is thump, thump, thumping up the stairs.
“It’s alright,” Mama says,
“Just don’t open your eyes.”

The monsters touch sears the skin
and his words freeze the soul.
Do not be scared child.

The chills of past mistakes enter the room
and the walls whisper
“Just don’t open your eyes.”

The monster takes my hand and breathes into my ear,
Daddy says,
“Do not be scared child,
just don’t open your eyes.”
