Motivation and Inspiration

Many times writers go through a period of Writer's Block. Unfortunately and as frustrating as that can be, writers may need to find a new venue of motivation and inspiration to conquer such a block.

A few weeks ago I had asked the question what inspires and motivates you to write and had an overwhelming response within a very short period of time. I personally want to thank each and everyone that participated in answering that question! Thank-you!

I had also asked if I could quote some of the responses. There were a few that gave me their permission to quote them in this hub and I want to share that with you as well as share what I find both inspirational and motivational.

I hope this Hub will show you ways others become inspired as well as share with you a few tips that might help motivate and inspire!

Motivation and Inspiration

There are many ways to find both motivation and inspiration. I personally draw my inspiration from my environment as well as from other Hubbers that are mentioned later in this Hub!

Here are some tips to help you become motivated and inspired.

  • Carry a Notebook, Pencil, and even a Camera at all times

I don't mean a netbook or laptop although that may help some. Inspiration can come from anywhere. When you see something that may be inspirational or motivational, take notes without looking at the paper. If you are able and don't come across as creepy, take a picture.

Reason I am stating this is that your initial reaction will come through on the paper. When you look back through your notes as well as the picture, look carefully at your handwriting--was it neat, or rather rushed and nervous, perhaps even skittish and scared. This can give you perhaps a subconscious feel of what you saw.

  • Set Goals

This may seem as strange way to find motivation or inspiration but it can help you.

For instance, the picture at the beginning of this Hub is from Disney World. My family and I were fortunately treated to Disney World in 2009 thanks to my mother-in-law who had just come back from her 2nd deployment as well as other family who contributed a little extra for spending money. I have to say it was the most magical place I have ever been. I was in complete awe.

How does this motivate and inspire me? The pictures we took are inspiration in itself, however the real inspiration and motivation is that we want to go back as soon as financially possible. By setting this goal, I am very motivated to do my best to help that goal happen.

  • Think about what you love to write about, then look for pictures on the internet and/or in family albums

For example, perhaps you like writing about dogs. If you don't have a dog that you can draw inspiration from, look at pictures and videos of dogs on the internet. Or perhaps you had a dog as a pet when you were a child, look at those pictures through family albums and draw inspiration from those. This will help you to feel motivated to write.

  • Read a book from your favorite author

Again, this may seem a strange way to draw inspiration and motivation. However, one of my favorite writers is J.R.R Tolkien and others that I favor are Edgar Allen Poe, Dr. Seuss, Shakespeare, as well as Homer. This may not seem like a surprise to some that have read some of my writing samples, however, just reading a few pages allows me to draw on the energy of their writing.

Reading what you like can also help you incorporate some of the voice of those that you admire. At the same time can help you find a voice that is unique to you.

One exercise you may want to try is to take a paragraph from a book of one that you may admire, and then completely re-write that paragraph that is unique to you. Continue re-writing that same paragraph until it becomes an entity of its own.

  • Listen to Music

Again, this may seem odd, but listen to the genre of music that you find inspirational. For me, I listen to many, many different types of music. When I am writing poetry, to list a few, I may listen to John Lennon's Imagine along with a few Beatles songs, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, U2, Eric Clapton, Metallica, Counting Crows, Beethoven, Bach, John Williams etc. Whatever type of music that fits the mood that I am in and I draw their energy into what I write.

Listen carefully to the Lyrics and perhaps look up the Lyrics on the internet so that you can be inspired and motivated by the spoken words. Take notes on how the music makes you feel.

  • Watch a Movie or a Show

Watch a movie or a show that helps you become inspired for the genre you want to write about. For example, if you love to write about romance, watch a romantic movie and draw your inspiration from there.

If you like to write about cooking, than watch a cooking show to help inspire and motivate you to write.

  • Read other Hubbers!!!! Please continue to read this Hub to the will see those that I draw inspiration from!!

Hubs are a great way to draw inspiration, encouragement, motivation as well as so much more! Read those that inspire and motivate you!!

There are many ways that you can become inspired and motivated. The key thing is when you are dealing with Writer's Block, no matter what, do NOT stop writing. You do not have to write a masterpiece, just don't give up on yourself this too will pass. Never give up on dreams or goals!!!

What Inspires and Motivates Fellow Hubbers

In alphabetical order, below are the quoted responses from those that were kind enough to give permission!! A special Thank-you to Born2Care2001, Rod Marsden, and SidKemp!

Almost anything inspires me to write but generally I am most inspired by genuine acts of kindness, the awesomeness of nature and the demonstration of love. What motivates me is entirely different. I'm motivated to do what I love most and often that entails expressing my inner thoughts and feelings. When I see them on paper it's as if something unreal became real, it manifested and creation is so motivating. Egotistically, one other thing motivates me. Since I have no biological children, I have a strong desire to leave a legacy through words, spoken or written. Whether I accomplish this is immaterial. The legacy is trying!

Rod Marsden

Getting the truth out there is sometimes a motive. I have also various books out there that deal with the truth in various ways. I get angry when people I know and care about are badly represented and/or lies are being told about them.

The simplest answer is that I love to help people live in peace and love and create success.

As a vision, I see writing as a tide that flows - the state of the world flows into me as I live and connect, and a deep light of Spirit and Soul sends a flood of good stuff back out in reply!

I created this award specifically for the people that have been a huge part of my life since I have started on HubPages.

The sun represents eternal hope, no matter what happens in life, the sun will again rise and offers warmth, life, as well as friendship! The infinity symbol represents everlasting unity as friends forever united as writers!

Awards go to...(drum roll)

There are many on HubPages that motivate and inspire me.

However, there are those very special few that have gone way beyond normal means to show me encouragement, support, friendship, and appreciation since I started here a month ago!

I so very much always appreciate the comments, suggestions, votes, and shares and although some on this list do not comment often, they still show me a ton of support in other ways.

And although this award in not in anyways endorsed by HubPages, these select few deserve special attention. I would truly appreciate those that follow me to take the time to read a few of their Hubs and Thank them for helping so many!!!

The list below is in alphabetical order:

Although, many may not know, some of his reflections are based on other Hubber's Hubs!! He mentions the name of the Hubber in the title as well as a link to the Hub he is reflecting on within the opening paragraph.

There are several Hubs I have read from Hubbers that I do not follow because of the link he provides. I wish him and his fiance the very best of luck!!!

Thank-you Nick!

Look to those you admire, look to the resources that you have available, and NEVER stop writing!!! You can do this, Writer's Block is just a pesky wall that in time can be knocked down!!

There are several other Hubbers that were not mentioned in this Hub because they are newer not necessarily to HubPages, however newer to me!! The people that are mentioned in this Hub has been non-stop support for me since I started. I do plan on posting more awards in the future for those that inspire and motivate me!!

Thank-you for taking the time to read this Hub!!! Please feel free to comment!!

You have gone above and beyond the call for me and you don't know how grateful I am for that. Your insightful poem on war was my inspiration for one of my poems, as you know, and I give you full credit.

You write with tremendous depth, and always from the heart. Your words blend into visions that go long after the poems are over. They bring out your inner beauty for all to see and indulge themselves.

First off, I would like to say that this was an incredible way to deal with writer's block! Very creative and unique, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Second, the tips you have provided for motivation and inspiration were excellent! My most favorite was listening to music, if you couldn't of guessed it! :)

Third, the question you asked seemed to gather a lot of positive and thought provoking feedback. My favorite response was that by SidKemp. It was simple but yet also very profound!

WOW! Patty, I am so touched, honored and flatered to be among such awesome hubbers in your tribute! I do not feel worthy but am very thankful! You are too kind! Thanks for the award! I love it!

And finally fiftfh(hopefully I have not put you to sleep yet), This was an awesome hub! I am glad to be following you! You are kind, compassionate and very supportive of my work. I appreciate your loyalty so much!

      Take Care Patty!
