Mount Everest of Life---a Poem

Val is a life-long student of the psycho-philosophy of living and a devoted practitioner of many techniques that enhance personal evolution.

How many have reached Mount Everest of life

only to regret each treacherous step

through heartless cold of money and strife,

now just remembered as ordeal and mishap.

Lonely is the life at top of the world

shunned by rivals and envied by snobs,

never at peace, and constantly hurled

with nothing to live for but endless jobs.

Like a mirage in a white desert of ice,

pop up illusions of grandeur and power

with Lady Fortune in person rolling the dice

one brick at a time for an ivory tower.

Then sooner or later may come the time

for a nostalgic look down those many hills,

skin feeling a size too tight, covered with grime,

with nothing around that would look like thrills.

Sadness creeps into life that's begging for new meanings

those valleys below calling with each sigh,

looking more and more like only true winnings

making of all riches a regrettable lie.

So, sparing ourselves of that climb to despair

let's embrace our treasures for a moment unseen

never to be blinded by that icy glare.

Mount Everest of life can never turn green.
