My Distant Shore of Vietnam

A poem of love

It sounds so trite that I walked upon the distant shore

But across the Pacific is quite distant and more

I loved so deeply of my bride and wife

And committed to our matrimony my whole life

Oh do not wag your fingers and sneer at me

It was my first lady who chose not in love to be

I had already raised children by the ocean

And now in my heart stirred a new emotion

And this beach was a refuge to so many who fought

I came as a trader of money I sought

Da Nang is a lover’s paradise in war and peace

To me it gives this life a simple brand new lease

My new wife, to be, has Ranger dad with faith in me

Her father who fought with our infantry

Losing one leg to a battle cry by the Green Beret

He gave his youngest to me on a wonderful day

Now it’s my job to take her safe away from war

So now she has for me a son that she bore

Named after her father my friend on a once distant shore

Letters From a Distant Friend of Lover are the Best!

A Fine Boy

Thank you Mona. Some days I just shake my head in wonder of how my lady has/does and will love me so much that she puts up with me. Life is good.

I had to read every line very slowly so that I could absorb the gist line for line, and better appreciate the full story. This is a beautiful poem Eric, with many layers of feelings and meaning. I also think that boy with the Vietnamese hat is lovely. Lucky you:).

Hi Demas, I like your description. And indeed you are right. I suppose you have a story or two to tell about your beautiful bride also.

A nice biographical love poem, and every love poem is deserving.

What an interesting story for me as a good friend of mine that we called "whale" was a gunner on the helicopters and left Da Nang just before the big boom. I will continue to search my memory as to what "forward" base he was assigned to, he just talked about how red the dirt was. So going to Sedona Arizona or in the Grand Canyon Supai seemed distressful to him.

Yes I do feel love with poetry. Perhaps there is a catharisis waiting to happen.

Wow! I am so pleased you were again encouraged to write poetry, a talent of a lover that, maybe, will inspire you to comprehend the wholistic view life has in store for us.

During my second tour I spent the first 6 months at Da Nang AFB and left for Phu Cat maybe a week before the monition's dump blew up. Thanks to fate, I wasn't touch by the shock wave which damaged many buildings in the area of the base I once lived.

Thank you Dora. I truly am enjoying working on "poetry" I have much encouragement and mentoring here. Manatita has taken me under his wing so that I am more aware of what makes the prose more enjoyable to others. I look forward to growing.

Sorry I'm so late, my friend. This got buried in the In box, and luckily I found it this morning...luckily because it's all about love, and you know that's my favorite topic. Thank you for sharing your family with us. You are a lucky man!

The poetry is very beautiful. It has a narrative style and the contents are interesting which makes it a beautiful tale. There is a feel to it which toushes the emotions and I would hesitate to change your voice. Still, a little or marginally off in a line or two. I will look at it for you. Thanks again for asking.

P.S. I was very tired last night and I read two pieces of yours. That part about the ending being not strong relates to the prose, but you seem to be asking me about the poem. I think you treasure it and why not? It's a great creation.

Ruby--Betty and I have come to agreement that our marriage did work out. Only a decade and a half. But a lifelong admiration and different love for each other. 3 just awesome children.

My bride now of 14 years plus has come to love those children so much that she relies on them. If circumstances are such that things do not seem to work, we look at love and they are all just as they are supposed to be.

      Blessings to you and Paul

I would need to read it again with this in mind. I can say that you usually end strong while I felt that in this piece it was the opposite. Give me till tomorrow as its 2346 hrs here and I worked hard today so will retire soon.

Then I will look at it with fresh eyes. Thank you for asking, although I did think you were suggesting this before. Much Love and good night.
