My Life Before

Updated on January 12, 2013

My Life Before

by Alice Olsen

My life before was so much better, so much worse,

It was so much easier, so much harder.

Which was it?

Both and neither one at once.

Wherever you stand in life, the view is hazy,

Like mist over mountains.

Sometimes shadow shades the hills.

Sometimes sunbeams pierce the clouds.

You can only see one tiny portion at a time,

And judge the whole from that small view.

To see it all, one must climb to the peak of life.

There, at the end, the full view lies before you,

Life before was so much better, so much worse,

It was so much easier, so much harder,

Because it was living,

With all the dark and light woven together

In a rich tapestry of days.
