My Nan, a tribute to a wonderful lady who meant so much in my life.
A woman fair who spoke her truth
Shared with my sisters Alison, Ruth
Hugs and cuddles on a lap
A kindly word and not a slap
Tea from a saucer, cools it down
Did the tea leaves bring a frown
Enormous ‘stays’ held firm flesh and skin
Laced down the back and whaleboned in
A woman large, majestic being
Clear and thoughtful in her seeing
Uncles, cousins, boys in blue
Each of them meant much to you
Family scattered far and wide
To other boroughs, other side
Husband, daughter gone in weeks,
Gentle tears streaked your cheeks
Son and granddaughters far to roam
Call another country home
Aunty Annie, cups of tea
Letters then from you to me
Down to the market bag in hand
Yes you can come and lend a hand
To the ‘Spooks’ on Saturday night
Up Sunday morning shining bright
To the cemetery graves to see
Flowers fresh from you and me
Extended family all around
Some long buried in the ground
Some just names from times gone by
Others memories that make one sigh
Then home again to family tea
Food and laughter will you see
Good dinner set and food galore
Family members coming through the door
Groaning table, lots of tea
Love and laughter for you and me
