My grandma and grandpa

Updated on August 10, 2014

My grandparents life story

My grandma and grandpa
the best in town
bold and courageous
and never a frown

Both were born
during World War I
believe me that war
was really no fun

They grew up
in difficult times
in a country recovering
world war crimes

And then when they
had finally grown up
World War II
was about to erupt

My grandfather was
at that time
a sailor man
enjoying his life

So in the year
the Simon Bolivar
hit two mines

He landed in the
cold North Sea
with a broken back
he floated free

He was saved
and taken ashore
and that is how
he kicked off the war

Meanwhile Hitler
raged around
with his strategies
oh so profound

His fascist regime
transformed the place
the Jewish race

My grandpa and grandma
did not give in
to Mr. Hitler’s
mindless spin

Always rebelling
and stealing food
and on top of that
they sheltered Jews

Then in the year
my mother was born
their dream came true

Two years later
their son was born
their family complete
yet the country was torn

Holland was suffering
in terrible ways
the Nazis had darkened
everyone’s days

At last the war
came to an end
the Nazis were gone
peace back in the land

Rebuilding their country
was now at hand
restoration of
a barren land

My grandparents worked
as hard as they could
and even though poor
their life was good

They had their children
and each other too
their days filled with laughter
what else could they do

So life went on
and the children grew up
until the day
that life simply stopped

At the age of sixteen
their son called John
went out with friends
to have some fun

They went out riding
down the streets
on their mopeds
a regular fleet

Then all of a sudden
the doorbell rang
the police was there
they had come to tell

That their son called John
had an accident
hit by a car
he had come to his end

They buried their son
a promising boy
the sweetest soul
who gave them joy

My granddad collapsed
on his grave
tuberculosis had eaten
his health away

But strong as they were
this too they survived
and they were able
to carry a smile

Life went on
and some years went by
until my grandma
got paralyzed

The doctors told her
to give up hope
they gave her a wheelchair
she would walk no more

My grandma then
politely refused
and left the wheelchair
forever unused

She fought and battled
to walk again
and so she did
according to plan

Resilient and tough
like only a few
and always smiling
what else could they do

They lived their lives
and years went by
until my grandma
almost died

She developed a tumour
in her throat
and of course a doctor
she gave not a thought

Until one night
that she almost choked
she was brought in for surgery
or else she’d have croaked

During surgery
the surgeon sneezed
a vocal cord cut
that stopped her speech

Of course this too
she overcame
and like everything else
with a smile on her face

They grew older
joking around
yes they knew
what life was about

My grandpa still
had pretty bad lungs
and often we thought
his end had begun

Many a times
he threw up blood
then was hospitalized
but die he would not

And when he recovered
the very next day
he always laughed
the pain away

In the end
my grandma lost
most of her sight
but down she was not

For she was able
to clearly see
beyond the worldly

So whenever I’m down
or feeling blue
I think of them
and what they would do

My grandma and grandpa
the best in town
bold and courageous
and never a frown

      Dear LadyFae, Greetings,

The story of your Grands is extremely touching,

The man who loved, and woman was loving,

Together they dared and survived Holocaust,

Gathered their lives and lived till last.

Lord, though tested them every time,

Answered as they with the sweetness of chime.

MAKUSR salutes them as bravest in town,

Bold and courageous, and never a frown.

LadyFae I salute you for telling such a moving story so passionately. I am touched by your emotions. The love for your Grands peeks from every line. Voted up!

      Lots of Love,
