My ladybird comes each morning (a poem)

Updated on September 3, 2013

Sometimes, as we wander through our lives, someone crosses our path, and places an indelible mark on our hearts and minds.  For me it is exceedingly rare to have encountered such a deep and lasting friendship, as the one that inspired me to write the following prose.  I wrote this for a dear friend as a surprise birthday present (this is the first poem/prose I have written).  The strange thing is, although we've never met in person, and we live half a world apart..thanks to email, it's as though we are sitting beside one another during our many exchanges.  I hope you enjoy the prose as much as my dear friend did upon first reading it.

My ladybird comes each morning

My ladybird comes each morning
Telling tales of her many exploits
I listen intently to her sweet songs
Sung for my ears only.
I delight at her presence
When she alights at my window
Her playful humour and irreverance
Always lightens my mood

My ladybird has very colourful plumage
Each colour seems to represent
The many sides of her personality.
The yellow is her sunny disposition
Her primary colour.
A mood of blue

though sometimes appears

But soon gives way to the brighter hues
And she sings sweetly once again

She's not content to remain perched

Upon the same branch for too long
Too many interesting branches

to explore.
Always taking in the scene,

and observing,
Understanding the essence of
each branch in turn
Till she flies away
To return for but a few brief moments
Later in the eventide

She's wise to the ways of the world
Of nature, of beauty, of reason
Nothing escapes her purview.
All the while she watches me
She knows my thoughts and moods

Each day I realize my good fortune
To have such a beautiful creature
Grace my space with her presence.
Without expectation,

without judgement.

We laugh, we cry, we share..
our hopes and dreams
our likes, our displeasures.
A mutual appreciation lingers
Long after she makes her exit

Long after our earth lives

have had their turn
A spirit between us both shall remain
Never to be broken.

I won't soon forget my ladybird

The beauty they bring to us is so often taken for granted. Thank for the beautiful words and lovely photos. Loved this poem. :)

Hi sofs, hi Su. I guess you might say I was somehow compelled by a flash of inspiration. Now that I've got that first one out of the way, I may be similarly inspired to create more. A big thanks to both of you. :)
