Growing Old - My Thoughts

Updated on February 28, 2017
Source

Old age gradually creeps up on us. Little by little etching lines and wrinkles on our skin. The human body can grow old, but the spirit is not affected by age. The spirit in us is always young.

Growing old,

Day by day,

Feeling weak,

Frail and brittle,

Difficult to stand,

Bones groan and creak,

Legs went weak,

Walking, I stumble,

I sigh and heave.

Hands cannot hold,

Weight,

Difficult to hold,

Cannot remember,

January, March or December,

Names, hard to recall,

Cannot hear loud and clear,

Colors black and white,

All faded, in my sight,

Growing old,

Day by day,

Every second,

Hobbling along,

On my way.

Youth in Me

However old,

With miseries untold,

Aches and pains,

Taking stronghold,

No sleep at night,

Or in daylight,

Whatever happens,

Or whatever maybe,

The young spirit in me,

Will live, wild and free.

Old age you mean nothing to me.

ChitrangadaSharan thank you and you are so right age is just a number.

Arun Kanti thank you, we can definitely feel young whatever the age!

Harishprasad thank you, you have put it so well.

Nithya, in spite of all signs of decay that our body reflects in our old age, our spirit always stays fit and very buxom. We must keep up burning with grace till this candle ( body) has substance. Our light ( relationships and dealings ) and not our body, will tell our story. Great work ! Voted up.

Although we can't turn back the clock to our twenties at 70 we can still look young if we have the right spirit and positive attitude. Thanks for the interesting hub well presented.

Loved your hub and can relate to it, having passed the golden age myself. Nice presentation with suggestive pictures and beautiful poem.

As long as one is active, positive, energetic with a fertile mind--age is just a number.

      Thanks for this interesting hub!

This is great! I am lucky at my advanced age to really feel little different than I did at 40. I no longer run, but walk a lot and started a yoga class not long ago. As long as the spirit remains young we are alive and vibrant. May your spirit remain young in the New Year!

      Nithya,

This is a beautiful poem. I especially like the ending where you say the young spirit in me will live wild and free. A person is only as old as his spirit is. Voted up as beautiful and sharing with followers.

We all survive on memories as a reminder of what we were and keep going. Your mother was awesome and as young as young could be. Thank you.

I know this is true. My mother with Alzheimer's could never believe she was old as she was and thought my dad who had passed on was gallivanting in another state somewhere. I think it must be a survival thing to live on the young thoughts. Huh..well I am making a career on it, lol.

We all need that philosophy as we age.

You were depressing me early on in the poem; I hope I never get like that although I suspect nature will have something to say about it. However, I love my age now; almost 64 and loving life so, so much. Wonderful poem and message.

I really like the way you ended this poem, Vellur. A youthful spirit makes wrinkles mean nothing at all. I earned every line on my face, so I learned to live with them and not obsess about the way I look. I feel sad for people who let vanity ruin what should be their"golden" years while they're pining for lost youth. Every phase of life has its advantages. It's up to us to discover and enjoy them. Thanks for a meaningful poem. Voted Up, Awesome and Beautiful. Jaye

I love this! I think you were hearing me this morning and writing my thoughts in this hub. As we age, we begin to slow and things that were once so easy to remember sometimes seem to float away. I love how you ended this poem, we are always young at heart.
