My Youth

Updated on March 19, 2017

I wish I'd known, back when I was young
That midnight's end brought a scorching sun.

And I wish I'd known that sleepless nights
Brought staggering pain, and lucid heights.

And when I was young, I wish I had known,
That desperation came from being alone.

And I wish I'd known that empty halls
Brought loneliness right through the walls.

And when I was young, I wish I had known,
That the hurt I had coming would chill to the bone.

And now that I'm old, I face the pain of my youth
Now I am scarred and what hurts is the truth

Interesting constructive criticism Ralph, I'll keep that in mind as I write in the future. Thanks so much for the feedback and the time you took to give it to me. :)

This piece has the makings of a real emotional breakthrough, yet I'm left with an unsatisfied feeling of not being privy to the key which turns the lock - the loneliness you allude to as a young person is described with so much passion and feeling, but as a reader I'm not sure why you were so lonely....
