Never Forget a Friend Like You

Updated on February 23, 2014

Martin and Frank the last drink together

First I’d like to say this is my 100th hub and I’d like to dedicate it to a very, dear and close friend who died unexpectedly in February 2006.

Hello my friend
It’s been awhile
We were friends since high school days
We never had to say much
It was good just being together
We must of walked the streets of Manhattan
Hand in hand a thousand times
Delighting in everything we saw
You and I go back so very far
Even when an ocean separated us
The phone would ring
And I’d hear your voice
The last time we parted
At the airport when I flew back
What if I hadn’t said good-bye
What if I’d said see ya
What if I had taken one more picture
To remember you by
Those what ifs still echo in my mind
And that fateful day
When I needed to reach out to you
In my usual happy style
To your mom on the phone I said
Is he at work or is he home?
The answer came like a death toll
He died
He died?
Don’t scare me
Just let it be no
But it was so
Then came those sweet memories
Of one of our last conversations
You and I laughed
At how it would be when we had turned old and gray
How we’d laugh the days away
Remembering the early times
And our friendship through the years
But you didn’t grow old along with me
You chose to go a different way
And to this day
I wonder why.....

At the airport saying our last goodbyes

Rasma it's so touching. That's life, we never know what's around the corner. That's why we need to live every day to the fullest and appreciate all that we have, and those around us we care for.

What a lovely piece to write as your 100th hub. None of us are promised a tomorrow. Good reminder to live each day as it is our last day, as it very well may be, and to love each other as deeply, as you have loved your friend. Faith Reaper

Yes, Katrine that's true. It seems we are never quite prepared for the blows life gives us so it's best to live each day as though it were our last just to appreciate the beauty life holds.

Dear Gypsy - What a terribly sad, but moving and beautiful poem. It is so hard when we suddenly lose someone we love dearly, especially when we just knew we would have many more years together. Thank you for sharing this with us. Theresa

Thank you so much for your comment Theresa. Yes, his loss was felt greatly as we went back a long time and it was too soon and too unexpected. However I like to think he's out there somewhere not far away.
