Never To Be - A Poem

Updated on June 13, 2013

What could have been can never be

I made the trap but not the key

Three walls and chains, the rack, nails, knives

The hand that's bound runs the device

There is no fourth wall, only sky

No path, but sun and breeze

Fear guards the invisible wall

And so I never leave

Once in a while the chains do give

A tiny step, but it hurts to live

Familiar torture is preferred

To agony in an unknown world

The daily nightmare, the daily grind

Pull the lever, numb the mind

In the nightmare, for a moment, I think I smell the sea

But a jail cell is my home

I'm right where I belong

What could have been can never be

This excellent work, Crystal. What imagery you evoke. I can feel your trap, maybe even relate to it some.

A tormented soul indeed. This was such a profound poem! This almost reminds me of what an agoraphobic individual must feel like, for example you wrote, "In the nightmare, for a moment, I think I smell the sea

But a jail cell is my home I'm right where I belong What could have been can never be". This was awesome. Thank you for sharing. (Voted Up)

Great write. Sad and dark but exquisitely written...moving piece, which makes the reader think, what could actually be in the mind of this poet.

      Up, pinning and sharing.

This is heartbreaking. We must always consider the consequences of our actions.

Wow, thank you Epi. I have been away for a while, not much time to write, but woke up yesterday morning and wrote this in my head while lying in bed. Not sure where it came from. I take your opinion very seriously and am so grateful and excited to receive them.

Good afternoon Crystal - this is my favorite piece of writing by you - ever!!!! And it reminds me of dat guy from lake erie and his style of writing - where you say so much in so few words - it's evocative, emotional and richly cinematic in its storytelling - I am so proud of you for this piece - hubbravo and big Canadian hugs to you from Colin, Little Miss Tiffy and Mister Gabriel at lake erie time ontario canada 1:27pm and I hope all is well with you

I will share and link your page here on my FB wall

You are a very good poet, Crystal. I hope we see more of your poetic side in the months to come....yes, it is dark and yes, it is sad, but it is also powerful in its simplicity. Well done!
