Not All Residents of Sweden Are Swedish! A Limerick

Updated on June 16, 2015

What is there in a name?

Far and near are not the same.

Before the advent of GPS, the longest journey usually began with a wrong step!

Swen went to Sweden to stare at blonde girls.

Only to find waiting just brunette curls.

He wondered what went wrong, expressing his disdain,

Only to discover, he'd gone to Sweden, Maine!

(Wrong flag, right furls!)

Note: There is a famous postcard showing a direction sign with the mileage to famous towns in Maine. Included on the sign are distances to China, Maine; Denmark, Maine; Lebanon, Maine; Mexico, Maine; Norway, Maine; Peru, Maine; Poland, Maine, Sweden, Maine, and Wales, Maine. Further confusion can arise from distances to the Maine towns of Paris, Moscow, Stockholm, Athens, Detroit, Belgrade, Bremen, Carthage, Avon, Smyrna, Hebron, and Washington (although there is a rumor started that the disgruntled residents of the latter are considering changing the town's name to United Nations, Maine!)

DanaTeresa - If you search for "Famous Maine Mileage Signs" you will find several photos of some of them. I'm glad you enjoyed this limerick some time ago.

Gypsy Rose Lee:: Do you recall my story of two men, likely from Afghanistan, who had just arrived in the states at Dulles International and were trying to get a cab driver to drive them to Seattle? Better be careful which Washington you want, too! (No wonder that ticket agent, was cheaper than anyone around!)

Mhatter99: Yes and reading my reply to tallgardener's comment, you received another one. Did you see my comment on one of your recent Limericks?

Voted up and funny. It's the same humor here since there is a city in the U.S. known as Moscow everyone says before you get on the plane to Russia find out if that's it's destination.

Now, you knew a limerick would attract my attention

There once was a man from Somerset.

The nicest man I ever met.

      He knows what's a Limerick.

He'll write one so super quick.

And that one you won't forget.
