Novel Writing Tips and Tricks
Beginning Writer's Notebook
The first thing is identifying your topic and researching said topic. You need to do this because it helps you get the bones of your story right from the beginning. If you are writing a creative non-fiction piece it's important to do this so you can have the best chance to get your setting and storyline in a good place.
Then you want to get your character list and start working with character sketches and see how the characters will interact in the different stages of your story. As you learn more about your characters in this stage you want to pick your hero or heroine and start getting the subordinate characters to interact with him/ her in different ways and expand your world.
You might also want to develop a villain from the get go to balance out the good side of things and maybe even an inter-loafer to keep both the main characters honest and at the same time interesting. The villain doesn't necessarily have to be bad, maybe just a lost soul looking for good outside guidance. The inter-loafer should be someone who has knowledge of the good and bad things about both main characters and can directly affect the storyline by interjecting those things at strategic times in the story writing process.
At this stage everything should start to come together and you might be able to storyboard a few chapters and then eventually write them out.
