Just like old, worn, broken-in shoes, a familiar, special fit

Years pass; life changes; but they remain and never quit

Marriage, families, distractions of life constantly abound

But old friends are ever there; always around

A helping hand; an encouraging touch, just little things

The sound of their voice; their laughter’s familiar ring

Of all the things cherished in this old hometown

Old friends are ever there; always around

Sharing it all; aging bodies and the graying of the hair

Aware of times spent apart; smiles when you are there

There’s nothing better in this world to be found

Old friends are ever there; always around

Good times and bad; willing to share each and every one

There when things get tough; there to share in the fun

Years of knowing each other; mutual respect that abounds

Old friends are ever there; always around

Time runs low; the granules of sand pass the hour glass

The reaper comes to call and from this world we pass

Shedding tears by the grave; flowers all around

Old friends are ever there; always around

Memories of days gone by; friends forever in time

Special memories all about us; forever in the mind

Cherished thoughts and times eternally abound

Old friends are ever there; always around

Truckstop Sally recommended this hub and I am so very glad she did. It is a wonderful piece that describes friends. You are right old friends are always there.

@Truckstop Sally...Yes, that poem is familiar to me. I was a cub scout for about a week. We made and tomahawk then disbanded! LOL! My inspiration for this one came from long-life friends who I see at different time but we really do not stay in touch as much as we should. When we do see each other, it is as if we have not missed a day...we're as comfortable together as old shoes. The other inspiration was my best friend throughout high school. As the years passed, we lost track of each other raising our families, etc. A few years back, we reconnected and made plans to get together. Sadly he was killed along with his father in a auto accident while returning from the funeral of his mother. Life deals some strange cards. Anyway, he was a big part of that inspiration as well. Thanks, Amy. WB

This is a beautiful poem, my new friend! Do you remember the Scout's childhood poem:

      Make new friends,

      but keep the old.

      One is silver,

      the other is gold.

      Love the song/video.

Price, Miller, and Nelson -- no better friends than these!

There are not too many people who have been there for most of our lives and they are precious. It's funny how it seems as if no time has passed when you get together again, no matter how many years it might be. I have a lovely friend who has shared many of life's turning points with me - we've known each other since we were 13 - and you know, she may be grey haired now but she looks the same to me! Wonderful hub, Wayne!

@Pamela99...Thank you. I came by it easy as I had some good thoughts to draw from over the years. True friendship is such a comfort as we progress through life. Our extended family becomes more and more important to us as we age. Thanks for the kind words! WB

@sadddleride1...Lucky for us, we have old friends. I note as I get loder, the process of friendship is more and more difficult. I think in part is my lack of energy to really invest into it as I did in my youth. We need to overcome that! Thanks for the great comments Ken! WB

Great video by two old friends. It's so nice to go back home and look up old friends that I have kept in touch with over the years, we share old memories of playing and having fun together through the good times and bad, nothing better than old friends. Thanks for the reminder Wayne.

Excellent poem. The girlscouts have a song that this reminded me of. "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, and the other is gold. A circle's round, and has no end. Thats how long I want to be your friend." It's usually a round robin song, but I have loved this song for as long as I can remember. Thank you for reminding me of good times.

@Tom Whitworth...You are so right Tom. You can also share a comfortable silence with an old friend and just be pleased to have their physical presence. Trading memories and laughs of times gone by is the best though! Thanks for the read and the good words! WB

@breakfastpop....Poppy, I think old friends are those brothers and sisters our parents never gave us but God wanted us to have. Those relationships make life worth living and teach the true meaning of friendship. WB

      Dear Wayne,

Beautiful words that I believe in. Old friends share your history and keep you grounded in the secure knowledge that you matter as much to them as they do to you.

@50 Caliber...sometimes it seems that 'old friends' is all there is that we can count on in this life Dusty. I lost a good one a couple of years back that really drove it home for me. Thanks for the good words! WB

@Ken R. Abell...I have a couple back home Ken and it does not matter how many years or how much water flows under the bridge, when we see each other, it's just like no time has been lost. Those are some wonderful lifetime relationships that we need to appreciate while we can! Thanks for your good words and so glad you enjoyed it! WB

Great poem. Stirred up lots of good memories. I recently reconnected with a childhood buddy I hadn't seen in twenty years & it was if all those years disappeared.

      Thanks for sharing.

Wayne, "Old Friends" has been and still is a blessing we have. You have done the topic well and added a favorite tune of mine that sealed this message. Much Peace and Love, Dusty
