Why I Like Writing
Ever since I started to love reading short stories and novels, I already know that I also want to become a writer. The astonishingly beautiful stories that I have read such as The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant and the Three Arshins of Land by Leo Tolstoy stimulated me to aspire to become a literary artist. While reading also the novels written by Anne Tyler, Sidney Sheldon, Anne Lamott and Amy Tan, I feel too driven with the idea that I wanted to become one of them.
It is not fully because I wanted to become famous. There is more reason than that. One of the clear reasons why I aspire to become a writer is that I wanted to be myself and on my own. I feel that I could express myself well when I write than when I speak.
I also like the feeling of being admired by people because of my talent in playing with words and syntax in order to create first- rate stories. Aside from that, writing would allow me to touch the hearts of millions of readers even without meeting them in flesh. While the writer is busy drafting for his next big project, people out there would chew and digest his published work and get carried away by its profundity.
When you are a well- read writer, you don’t insist yourself to other people by means of magazines or television in order to become well- known. You just continue to write and write good stories and inspire many people. Thereafter eminence follows easily. This is not an illusion. This is real and I wanted to be in it.
Another marvelous reason that inspired me to write is on Anne Lamott’s assertion on being a writer. She said in her book, Bird by Bird that, “One of the gifts of being a writer is that it gives you an excuse to do things, go to places and explore. Another is that writing motivates you to look closely at life, at life as it lurches by and tramps around.” I always believe that when you are a writer, you explore not just the depth of the physical universe, but also the abstract world that your imagination can only fathom. You serve as the key to that world you invented and if you are not too private, you might as well open the barrier of that world and allow others to see and explore its wonders by means of your write- ups.
I know what it takes to become a writer. There would be many difficulties that would come along the way especially for aspirants like me. But I think the best way to move ahead is to really know the fundamentals of literature and creative writing. In order for me to become an effective communicator, I should be aware of my environment and myself. More importantly, I must always believe that I can do what others can do in the field where I am interested in.
