Ode to June
Peter Pan Month
After a long northern winter the beauty of June always surprises me with its saturated greens and wildflowers, the first taste of garden lettuce and the impromptu trips to the beach. It is my favorite month, a month of possibilities and freedom. The month school kids run free and runners shed their pants for shorts. The month that anything seems possible, no matter your age.
So here's to June; to youth and possibility; to innocence and summer love; to dandelion wine and strawberry shortcake; to Peter Pan and anything else we can imagine.
Stay with me my fickle friend
Your promises kept in daisy chains white and gold,
Picnic Sundays bubbling with champagne laughter
And sunlight bright as buttercups under chins.
Stay like campfire smoke on flannel
And echoing hearty laughter of good friends.
Like Indian paintbrushes and lupines gone to seed
The scent of running mint, creeping thyme
And late night river swims.
Stay sweet as sun warmed strawberries and afternoon wine
As dear as freckles on brown skin
And secrets told aloud.
Just stay with me
Just for now.
