Ode to a Commando

Updated on March 23, 2014

The Warrior Knight

 Sir Galahad

Of all the loves

Before this day

You were the one

Who slipped away.

Memories tease

And curse the mind

Fast forward, pause

And then rewind.

I can not escape

Your haunting face

Nor deny my memory

Of that special place.

Speechless was I,

While catching breath

As I do recall

So scared to death.

For never had I,

Felt that way

Time had stopped

Its ceaseless sway.

All for you

My bonny lad

My fearless one

Sir Galahad.

Irish eyes

So clear and blue

Lonesome heart

Who never knew.

The Unit

Unspoken hero

Delta divine

Elite commando

You were mine.

Though we shared,

On borrowed time

Star crossed paths

I still do pine.

Top Notch you were

And one so rare,

While I myself

Did not compare.

Had I your strength

And depth of courage

I would have seen

Nor discourage.

Still you held me

In worthy light

And accepted me

My humble knight.

I was not ready

For one like you

Who gave it all

And I undue.

I still wonder

Every now and then

Had I followed you

Away from whim.

For unselfish reasons

I hastened to go

A woman's sacrifice,

Which you will never know.

Time has passed

And years do wane

Within my mind

You still remain.

I ask myself

As I often do

Unrequited, I ponder

Much of you.

Would we have today

What could have been

The sweetest surrender

As it was then?

I can not let go

Nor do I forget

The choice I made

And sadly regret.

"I'm so afraid to love you, but more afraid to lose
Clinging to a past that doesn't let me choose
But once there was a darkness, deep and endless night
You gave me everything you had, oh you gave me light"

Ziyena, this is a beautiful poem. It's sad that there is so much regret in this woman's heart. Regret can be a binding tether keeping us from moving on. Regret can also lead to jumping in with both feet. At least that way, you will have tried. No regrets.

Your words moved me. Love is sweet even if it is only a memory.

Yes, the one that got away. I made the mistake of trying to reunite and rekindle a lost love a couple of years ago. I naively thought the changes in us would not affect the old feelings. It was one of the worst and most disappointing experiences of my life and I should have left her as just a sweet memory of the one I loved the most but couldn't hold.
