Of Pride and Ambition

Updated on July 7, 2012

Woe unto those who dare to dream
Of a better life

For of pride

You never watch over me
Oh Pride, why do I draw you near?
What is the worth of your presence?
What became of humility’s veneer?

You quietly lurk in my mind
Time spent awaiting my fears
Every decision for your pleasure
My reward measured only in tears

Oh pride, please become my friend
Shelter me from life's sadness
Teach me to accept what is good
Living alone with strength and gladness

And of ambition

You crush all those before you
There is no value in restraint
For the tide set forth
Has no worth for a saint

Each step towards the summit
With a virgin sacrifice to your secular deity
It must be so for all who dare cross you
As only the weak peddle in empathy

Oh ambition, please gather your wits
What is worth the price others pay
So you can conquer new worlds
While we suffer as your prey?

And of your progeny, greed and selfishness

They have built their lives upon your example
For what the father set in motion cannot be undone
The assumption of enough was instead only the beginning
As legacy’s blood runs deep in the river from father to son

Very nice poem...I loved your saying to pride, "why do I draw you near?"...simply beautiful.

      'up' and much...and shared.
