An Opinion on Abs-Cbn's Closure

Updated on May 5, 2020

Writing is his passion. It is his way to speak to the world.

I have learned the closure (temporary I hope) of ABS CBN last night when my nephew told me that there were no more shows in all ABS CBN channels. I did not feel something about it yet since I don't watch much TV these days. But just this morning when I woke up, everything has sunk in.

Like you, I felt sad. It has been a part of me since I grew up with it. As its tag name says: KAPAMILYA, it has been a family to me. And like any friends, any family members, or any lovers we have, its goodbye pinches a part of my heart. It's like a part of you has been cut off and, naturally, it hurts. Detachment feels.

And I know it also hurts a lot of us based on my Facebook newsfeed. Everyone has good points on why it should not be closed:
1. It should have not done this time of the pandemic.
2. There would be around 11,000 employees who would be jobless. (As per BIR, 4,000 employees)
3. It's a good source of quality entertainment and reliable information.
4. It's against the freedom of expression; and so on.

Others also were in agreement with the said shut-down noting its being biased and at fault. And this results in a big clash between the two sides.

But, to tell you, one thing I have learned amidst this pandemic is to be humble. Yes! I have my own perspective on the issue. I am entitled to it. I have the freedom to express it. It is my right. But this does not mean I am correct and you are wrong! We just differ how we look at things, and that what makes us on the contrary. So to be humble means, I have to broaden my horizon and not imposing mine right away. I have to check the standing of my opinion. Its reasons. Is it because of personal bias? Or it can be a defense mechanism so as to prevent a future risk? Or just hitchhiking the majority? Most importantly, is it lawful?

We have our laws!

So, my say about ABS CBN's closure is... Well, we have our laws. It is set up to govern our actions ensuring that we can practice our freedom, our rights without overlapping to anyone else's. Still, on humility, let us abide by it despite curtailing our 'happiness' - our personal interests at any time and any given condition. It should be for the common good of everyone - not just a group we thought should deserve goodness. It means it should be good for ABS CBN, its clientele, its competitors, and for all.

If ABS CBN has lapsed, then let us not forget that there is/are consequence/s. So, it should accept the said consequence/s even if it means its closure. But this should not be the end. If they truly are into the public service, then they would always find ways to correct it and not just get the sympathy of the public and, leave
everyone in an argument.

Moreover, it is somehow a turning point when it comes to imposing the law. For me, I appreciate the action because it made me realize that our authorities are not hesitant in imposing the laws even to a big name in society. So I am praying that they would continue to enforce laws without personal biases or hidden agenda and
that God would enlighten and guide them every time they make decisions.

This too shall come to pass. I know we'll get over this soon. ABS-CBN will have its return.

It seems like this shutdown might have been avoided, despite the virus. It is so tough for the employees. I hope they might recover at some point.

      Nice work!

People should understand the rule of law and maybe, dig deeper beyond the entertainment feels.

Whenever large organizations like this shut down, my heart always goes toward the loss of livelihood for the employees. It's hard to know what to say in times like these except, I hope they will recover.

Well said. While it is true that the shutdown of ABS-CBN is ill-timed and the loss of the jobs of about 11k regular and agency-based employees is deemed oppressive, it was already expected. This is not the suppression of media, as what most people say. There are other equally reliable sources of relevant news anyway. This is an execution of existing laws and this proves that despite ABS CBN being a powerful network, it is not above the law. The well-loved network will be back. It was shut down during the Marcos era and reopened shortly after. Let us just trust the process. While waiting for its redemption, let us just focus on staying healthy and sane during these trying times. Be safe and stay sane, darling.

I heard about this some time ago and I thought it was already resolved. That's not good at this time but I do hope they eventually pay their back taxes.

It seems a shame to close a tv outlet at a time of lockdown when it seems that its services are required more than ever.
