A Poem By a Motherless Daughter About Dying, Grieving, Grief & Mourning On Angel's Wings Her Heavenly Soul Takes Flight

Updated on July 1, 2014

On angels wings

Her soul takes flight

Across the moon

Into the night

Upon the wind

Her spirit has fled

Free from the pain

Disease had bred.

Her soul is in flight

She is heading for home

In free easy grace

Will her spirit now roam

Heartbreak and sadness

No longer exist

She is floating upward

Into heavenly mists

Across the stars

Her soul takes flight

She drifts ever farther

From our sights

She's going home

She'll cry no more tears

Released from the worry

Released from the fear.

Across the dawn

Her soul flies on

A shadow of pink

Greets the rising sun

Her heart is light

Her spirit is free

She soars ever upward

Toward eternal peace

Bound to the earth

An anguished cry

We have no wings

We cannot fly

Blinded by grief

As she departs

Leaving only her memory

Within our hearts.

@Cshasong - I am so sorry for your loss, I watched my own grandparents struggle with the loss of their only child, my mother, and learned early that a child should never go before the parent, it is just not in the natural order of things. I am glad that you were able to find something akin to comfort in the words that I wrote. Thank you for the gift of your time, and for your very gracious comments, they are both welcomed and deeply appreciated.

As a daughterless mother, your poem resonates with me. It's only been 3 and a half years since my loss and I have yet to be able to capture the feelings with words. You did, so beautifully and eloquently.

I'll repeat what I said when I read it many months ago and add what a glorious talent you have for tender, loving tributes to all that you write about.

@gg.zaino - I am humbled by your kindness, thank you so much for taking the time to read this, it is greatly appreciated. My poetry is different from anything else that I write, as it just comes mostly on it's own, from somewhere inside of my heart. Since around the time that my mom got sick, and then subsequently passed away, it has mostly been my way of coping or dealing. Thanks again!

K- well done. Voted 'Up' on this one.

I have found that the more i write about loss it fades away more quickly and becomes no more. By writing I unburden myself.

Poetry is the art feeling, imagery and fine words. I believe you have all three components here K.

      peace my friend- greg

...well I have a soft spot for angels so I am glad that I have met a person who writes like one .....and one of my favorite films - Wings of Desire by Wm Wenders (check it out on You Tube) is a story about angels and their inner conflicts with mankind.

I really enjoyed the way you 'ascended' poetically speaking through the course of this piece - as if I was flying high too - well actually I was - after reading this!

Hmm this feels like someone died. I am sorry you lost your mother. I understood that much before my lazy brain was willing to read your comment. Well done and expressed.

Wow! Thank you everyone! When I woke up this morning, I didn't expect such an overwhelming response to something that it has taken me thrity-two plus years to complete, and that in the end is really just the interpretation of something.....(I don't know exactly what to call it...a dream? a vision? an idea? ) in any case, a picture that was created by, and then stored in my mental photo album, by my eleven year old self. This poem and I, we have shared a long and winding history that began with my mother's death at age 40 from metastic ovarian cancer in October of 1978, until now. Going through a box of my old journals recently rediscovered in my father's garage, I found it's earliest unfinished version scribbled across an otherwise blank page in my journal from November of that year. It's various unfinished incarnations are subsequently scribbled throughout my journals since then, as I would occasionally pull it out and adding and subtracting lines, attempt and then fail to paint exactly the picture that I saw in my head. Last night, for some unknown reason, it just finally all fell into place. For whatever it is worth, this is what I saw in my mind's eye, or in my dreams, or my imagination, (still at a loss as to what to call it..) on the day that my mother died. This is the picture that I have been struggling to share ever since my poor father had to tell his eleven and nine year old daughters that Mommy had gone to heaven. So while it is very special to me, I truly didn't expect that it would draw such a response, and I am humbled by your gracious and lovely words! Thank-you.
