One and Only Love

Updated on May 11, 2015

Is there a place you can go

where you find peace and comfort?

lock the world outside the door

and find true contentment

such a place was my home with you

he said in exasperation

so tired from having to fight

tired from having to defend

but she stood her ground

and told him to go out the door

if there is a time a person feels lost

that was how he felt as he put on his backpack

got on this cycle and roared on down the road

by night he was as far as he could go

and when he checked in at the motel

you saw a man who was crushed

just by the look on his face you could tell

the night in the dark motel room

was a night with a bottle of whiskey

and old songs of their days together

playing on the radio

he didn’t feel and he didn’t care

he just wondered where tomorrow would take him

and how far the money would stretch

between jobs since he wanted to be far, far away

when he rolled into California

he knew that somehow he was home

and he settled in and took on down the street

with his trusty guitar he found a gig

and by night he was singing broken hearted songs

to a crowd that cheered and demanded more

he was doing alright

with sold out concerts

and adoration from women galore

but all he had ever wanted

was a safe haven and a woman to love

a broken heart needs lots to be content

and this way he just kept moving on

then one sold out night

where he was finally singing his own songs

telling them how it was

the spotlight caught her

and his heart skipped a beat

their eyes met over the beaming rays

and he found himself singing to her

life goes on

love comes and goes

but there are chains that bind

and her’s reached so far

with a sigh

he acknowledged the woman he loved

and she, she loved him still

this time is was forever

this time they had ties that bind

and he knew he’d be singing for awhile

then they’d settle down

and all his love songs

that came from the heart

he would be singing

for her, his one and only love
