Open Your Eyes- A Poem

Updated on December 31, 2011

Society on it's youth does frown.

We're the future, are we not?

We are forced into cultures, and pushed down.

Our cries for help are ignored, forgotten.

Our acts of rage are truly our pleas.

Society's ignorance has driven us here.

We need a new door but have lost the keys.

They tell us we are Generation X, a lost hope.

They say we are delinquents.

All the negativity, how can we cope?

They say punishment is our fate,

aren't they driving us there?

Society open your eyes before it's too late!

We all begin life the same way, small and helpless dependent on those around us to protect us and introduce us to the world. As children we are filled with hope and an endless amount of dreams, nothing but positive intentions. Eventually we are told to put those dreams away and become adults. The innocence fades and a reality that is not entirely our own takes over. We are pushed to where we would rather not be, forced into roles we're rather not play. Here is where the problem begins, here is where Society fails it's youth. When will the cycle stop? Will you be the catalyst?

What a beautiful and eloquent expression of compassion and concern. This is so true, you should put this on a plaque or something so people can buy it and hang it on their walls and remember. Thank you for sharing.

Your words are so true Greenhousewife. We all start off as putty so to speak, innocent and helpless, relying on society to mould us. Generation X, and every generation in fact is the result of how they were brought up by the one before, so can't be held solely responsible for their actions. I have faith that the current one will actually be more responsible than the last. I hope so anyway. Voted up.
