Oppressed: A Poem

Updated on December 30, 2011

Oppressed

Too blessed to be oppressed ‘tho

The system reflects burdens of the past

The present is heavy on my back

Even as I relax in first class

Wrap sensitive scars in gauze

That weep beneath the stress

I scream until my voice is lost

I cry until no tears exist

Hunger pains of a gastric bypass

A mind defunct of attention span

Emotion floods to my waist

I wade into the ocean to escape

I am a ghost, my bones foreign

I hover through this dimension

Devoid of strings that once kept me

The doctrine I pledged in naivety

Footprints left in shifting sand

I hiccup words lodged in my lungs

Effervesced in my esophagus

A bitter taste on my taste buds

My best efforts are inarticulate

Language fails the obvious

I take faceless photographs

Remind me how to smile

Your pent up emotion evokes dark images, but your poetic narration is very beautiful.

You know for me writing, especially is a way to get out those frustrations that you can say in plain worse and only some will understand or help those who didn't understand become enlightened. I liked the first poem I read by you but this is solid gold!

Let me repeat that lol...I was trying to say that poetry or writing in general, allows one to say the things that can't be said in plain English or where only a few can relate. It makes it more palatable. They can become sometimes offended or enlightened...there we go.

I agree NightFlower. It is a challenge to articulate and make palatable that which is hardly tangible. Fear and ignorance thwart progression yet poetry provides an unobtrusive medium of expression. Fingers don't fail me now! Thank you!!
