What our reflections show: a tanka poem

Updated on August 28, 2012

We are a bundle of contradictions!

We are all a bundle of contradictions!

Image in puddle

The mirror returns the gaze

Looking back, silence

Then smiling whimsically

Bundle of contradictions

Quietly gazing

The image in the puddle

Quietly gazing

Then laughing, most cheerful soul

Yet crying with abandon

We are all a bundle of contradictions!

We laugh, yet cry

Source

Staring at ourselves

Visions looking back at us

Silently staring

Then moving quickly away

Stopping to think of the day

We are s bundle of contradictions!

We rush along, yet do stop at the most awkward of times.

Source

Silent fixation

Images staring, thinking

Quietly reflects

A picture of seriousness

Laughing at everything

We are a bundle of contradictions!

We laugh, but have our moments of seriousness.

What does our reflection show?

Reflection gazing

I return its quiet stare

In contemplation

Vibrant, its soul full of life

Yet cherishes quietness

We are a bundle of contradictions!

We love quiet, but there are times when we cherish a little bit of liveliness.

Very nicely worded and so true. "We laugh and have our moments of seriousness."

Ah the complexities and contradictions of the human animal, eh?

You capture it perfectly with your words and i was captured in the 'image' you painted with them..

on another note - i often wake up looking and feeling like the cutie in your first pic...lol..

amazing how a good cup of coffee improves one's perspective...haha

      well done!

Hi Rahul, sorry to be a little late in replying! True...we are shaped by our circumstances and our real selves sometimes die along with the things that we have to live up to. The important thing is to do our best......and show ourselves to be the good people we are. Thanks for coming by!!

      Beautiful write Michelle....

Sometimes our reflections show us who we really have become.. sometimes when we stare into the mirror and come to realize that the real self died and was erased years ago

      Nice write michelle

Thanks, Janine!! Like what your kids were trying to do...search for themselves....by looking in the mirror and we're all trying so hard to do that. Glad to see them trying to get a glimpse of themselves!! Good that they're fascinated by their reflections!! Thanks, my friend, for the read and the share!!

A mirror could be your best friend or worst enemy. We are good buddies, most of the time :) Awesome hub and poetry. A lesson learned by many.

Michelle, absolutely beautiful poem about the reflections we see in the mirror back at us. Your words were so true and so very thought provoking. I also loved the first picture of the baby looking at himself in the mirror. I remember my girls when they first saw themselves in the mirror for the first time, they were each mesmerized and still quite enjoy looking in the mirror to get a glimpse of themselves. I think they still think it is a trip or something to see themselves smiling back!! Seriously, loved the poem and have of course voted up, shared and tweeted too!!

Great tanka - looking in the mirror can be very enlightening sometimes can't it? Lately, I'm trying to avoid it :o)

When we look at ourselves in the mirror, the person that stares back at us can be a totally different soul. We are a bundle of contradictions!
