Overthinking Things

Updated on May 27, 2012

Overthinking Things

It’s so easy to overthink things

My brain looks for complications

Where there are none

I take a string lying straight,

And tie it into knots

I understand knots better

Than straight lines

It’s just the way I am,

I guess

I wrote this poem after getting the results of an AP Physics test back. It always happens that I end up overthinking the problem, making it out to be harder than it is, and I can't seem to solve it right because I go about doing it the wrong way. I've never actually failed a test because I've done this, but when I miss problems it's usually because I made a small mistake or I made the problem seem too complicated.

Many do the same thing. In fact, I tend to do this as well.

I used to over think so badly and then that would cause worry and anxiety on top of what I was already thinking/worrying about :( I have found slowly I have been able to force myself to do it less by consciously trying hard not to think too much on something past what I feel it needs and to also try and not carry issues over from one day to the next if possible.

I'm sure you are not alone with this problem. It's easy to make something harder than it needs to be. You have captured the feeling behind this phenomena.
