Detective Owns His Crime Scene

Updated on October 30, 2015

A detective owns his crime scene,

and that he knew,

you do what you do,

without better pay

and without more authority,

it’s just another day,

that’s what a tough city would demand,

and you just follow

the chain of command,

knowing that duty will call,

when a body happens to fall,

on that small parcel of land,

they call a crime scene,

the place to make a stand,

a detective gets one chance,

everything goes against the grain,

looking for evidence all over the ground,

emotions drain,

then the yellow plastic

police-line-do-not-cross

stripes come down,

you almost feel that loss,

and it strains,

the fire department turns a hose

on the blood-stains,

the crime would stall,

and the lab techs move on

to the next call,

what’s left is a sense of defeat,

as the neighborhood reclaims

that little part of the street.

Hmm...interesting Frank, but true. I read it from beginning to end though it is happening day to day and we do not pay attention to it. I shared and pinned it.

"Just another day" in too many neighborhoods and for too many officers. Even those of us on the outside feel that "sense of defeat." We're all affected.

And the street returns to normal, but there is a little bit of each homecide left inside the detective. His crime scene, his defeat.

A great write as usual Frank. Your poetry fascinates me.
