POEM: SALUTATIONS (Salute to the Military)

Updated on August 24, 2012
Source

I wrote this poem approximately three years ago for Veteran's Day. The inspiration was simply that I wanted to honor my military family for the sacrifices that have been and continue to be made on a daily basis. I've served my country faithfully for 20 years on active duty and in the reserves so I personally know what sacrifices it takes to be a part of this unique entity.

It was an honor for me to write this poem because there are those whose shoulders I've stood on due to them serving before me as well as those who've made the ultimate sacrifice. My hope is that those who have military members and their families living in your neighborhood or if you see them out and about ... give encouragement, a smile, a hug or simply a "thank you for your service."

SALUTATIONS

Red, White & Blue,

Are the true colors of their blood,

Serving faithfully and strong,

Whether at home or abroad,

“I do solemnly swear…,”

Is where it all begins,

“I will support and defend…,"

From beginning to the end,

These men and women,

Full of pride and strength,

Making the ultimate sacrifice,

To provide protection of another’s life,

They are true heroes,

They are the cream of the crop,

Honor is deserving of them,

From past to present,

Salutations,

Great military men and women.
