To Be Evergreen

Updated on January 21, 2017

Serenity

It’s funny as we get older, we tend to stop all the nonsense part of life. Well, at least most of us do. Most of us grow up and appreciate the simple things in life more than the materialistic side or the party side we loved when we were younger.

When we get up into our 30s and 40s, most of us have settled into a life of family and raising children. Some have careers as well that tends to take up a lot of time. I, myself, have had all the above, but in my late 30s settled in order to raise my kids alone. Life got busy, and lonely, and to keep sane I would find a peaceful place to go off to and just pray or marvel at nature, whether it be in my backyard or at the beach.

The thing I seem to love in life now, besides being with my children, is serenity. The peaceful feel of wind; I love wind, and I love watching wind rustle the leaves in a tree. I suppose that is why fall is my favorite season. I also love the birds chirping in the trees, along with those little rambunctious squirrels that like stealing the bird feed. I can sit outside and just think of all the wonders in the world, and I talk to God.

When writing this poem, I thought about the trees, mostly how flawless the evergreen is. It never fades or seems to grow old, it sits in complete splendor as the seasons go by, even the ones that would kill the rest, the evergreen still seems to hold its beauty no matter. I thought about if we could have that perfect presence in life as humans; not to last forever, the evergreen itself dies, but to be loved and beautiful and happy until the end of our time. I thought how perfect that would be. It may be silly, but it was a peaceful thought, and I came up with this poem from that thoughtful moment. I hope you like it.

Think about it...

What do you think is important in life?

See results

If we were...

If our lives could be like

Evergreen…

the sadness, we feel

would never tell.

Shedding it like a thief

in the night, and shining

again at dawns early

light.

If we could be like

Evergreen…

we would never feel

left out of a scene.

Put down or be made to

Feel useless, if we were

only as perfect as

Evergreen…

We could decorate the

world with our fresh

green brilliance; no one

would ever tire from

looking at our image.

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity... and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.

— William Blake

To grow as...

To grow old as

Evergreen…

is to never show our

age or sinful deeds;

oh what a splendid

state of grace that

would be.

Evergreen…

is pure, and portrays

a light, it never fails

to be just right.

If we could be as an

Evergreen…

we would sprout

beauty to our very

end.

Never to worry when

that may be. Oh, if our

life was as an

Evergreen…

A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.

— Saint Basil

That is true swalia, it is the ups and downs that keep life going. I can't imagine that any of us would get through this life without a few disappointments for sure. No, I think this poem was me at that moment thinking how lovely it would be if just for a little while experience life in a flawless way; no mistakes, no loss to endure, no growing old, to die in a perfect peace when it's time. It's purely a wonderment piece. Almost like if you were lying under an evergreen, and your mind wanders because of its beauty. :)

To live like an evergreen...beautiful imagination! Indeed life would be so beautiful then. But sometimes I think isn't it the ups and downs that keep the life going. We appreciate happiness only because we have known sadness.

I enjoyed this poem, I generally study plants from a botanical standpoint and don't often think of their more philosophical properties.

You have done well with this, my friend. Our lives run parallel to nature, and I think you have hit upon that. You will discover more as you walk your path. However, there is never an end. Don't mistake non-discovery for that. It will move at its own pace.

Ah, this is magnificent, Missy! I love both your poems. Wouldn't be wonderful to be as an Evergreen indeed. I love the serenity of the countryside and feeling the wind just as you have described.

Yours is a beautiful poem and a fitting ode to the evergreen which stands tall and lovely through all seasons, reminding us that even in the depths of winters chill life continues on. What a wonderful metaphor to remind us that even at our lives darkest moments we can go on.
