Poem: A Democracy

Updated on June 18, 2013

We anoint our country

with the peaceful transfer of power.

Like the maternal moss and its

warm and comforting blanket

over the fertile land, we look to

the leaders of the free world

to offer us the hope of new beginnings,

and to lead us out of this traumatizing darkness.

We pledge our faith and troth to you

and the belief in the process we call, a democracy.

We, the constituents of the United States of America,

historically, members of a respected world power,

must come together for a common good,

engendering kindness and resolve,

to do what is best for the whole,

all the brilliant strands of color, abilities,

and beautiful collective nomenclature.

Yes we, united, must pool our ideas

in order to promote cohesiveness,

for the anger has not served us well.

The bleeding out has exacted its pound of flesh,

forcing contaminated ideology and delusions to rise to the surface,

taking the lives of the innocent and most precious in its wake.

They are not our enemies, nor are they the answer to our sorrows.

So, rise above this narrow and small minded "cogito,"

extinguish that aspect of self- importance and ego

because success is embodied in the strength

of a united and healed nation.

Within that context, we will prevail and prosper once again.

Oh Robin, if it could only happen! Would it not be amazing if this nation could live up to its potential?

I share in your poem and the message it delivers. Well done my friend.

billybuc Bill, it would be wonderful if everyone would set aside the personal rhetoric and deal with the issues and challenges at hand, clearing the dark clouds. Thanks for the accolades and for taking the time to read this piece.

Wonderful! This we must do as a nation, come together. Turn away from greed and anger. Loved this. Thank you..

We can only hope that those we elected to represent our interests learn to cross over party lines. Sadly, I don't see much of that happening. President Obama has created a culture that is accepting of bad partisan behavior.

We can but hope that democracy will get the U.S. to become a strong and proud nation once more.

It is time we band together and speak out before we are silenced and our privileges disappear. Great poetic voice and reason.
