Poem About Snakes

Updated on June 25, 2012

I stood stock still
So nauseous. Ill
I looked it in the eye

Its careful, coiled
Poise. Blood boiled
The first to move would die.

Then two I saw
I think I'm sure
The second in a tree

I saw the third
Yes, three. A herd?
Approach my trembling knee

Snake four. Snake five.
Snakes alive.
I didn't dare to run

Instead I stayed
Now six - dismayed
This wasn't any fun

When seven came
I lost the game
And flinched, free from the stun

They sprang as one
I thought I'd gone
But that's when I saw Eight

This last attacked
The rest, I slacked
I think 'twas down to fate
