Poem - Be Strong My Child

Updated on January 3, 2011

Be Strong My Child

A poem given to my children....

Be strong my child
Tighten your grip
The sirens are calling
Eroding drip by drip
The watch moves past your eyes
To and fro as it swings
Luring you into hypnosis
Substituting control for blessings
Through a box they journey
Luring you with their charm
Make them live
At the end of your arm
An insatiable appetite
Attacking your defenses
Erecting their walls
Separating you from your senses
Your soul their enemy
Your self their foil
Pretending to be your friend
Frowning as you recoil
Gaining strength as you sleep
Suggesting how you are defined
Ultimately you become lost
They become your mind
Stand alone my child
Question all thought
Think as they distort
Never be bought
They want your money
They want your future
Pretending to be your friend
Your story they wish to author
So many listen
Unable to be free
Looking for meaning
They live robotically
Wake up my child
Take back your existence
Alone, set apart
Marry yourself to prudence
No matter what they think
You will be the rock
Only then will you be free
And life's secrets you will unlock

Independence, self control, self esteem, developing a back bone. Individualism, trust - caution...it's all here. Good lesson in this poem.

Thanks... there's a lot to cover isn't there? It's hard to reach kids. We sound like the Charlie Brown parents; "wonk wonk wonk." I'm hoping the poem will always be there and come to them in a new language.

Thanks Kristen... just trying to impart some of that "if I knew then what I know now" wisdom on them....

I am worried about children since I am dad of one daughter. They need more care. Thanks for your sharing.

It's the curse of being a parent; constant worry... but it's because of the incredible love. It's hard to love that much and ignore the vulnerability.
