Poem: Be Vigilant

Updated on September 30, 2017

Be Vigilant

They are brandishing weapons out there!

People are barricading themselves

indoors in fear.

I would not go outdoors.

Do you dare?

You would not do it either

if you care.

Save your own life

and protect your wife.

Hold your children close.

That man has a knife!

There is horrid violence

in that crowd's mentality.

What has happened

to this once beautiful city?

Aren't they ashamed

at what they are doing?

They do not want to be named

as they started looting.

Later, please meet us in the back.

Let it be at 11:30 tonight.

The car horn will be tooting.

We will need to stay out of sight

on the way,

but we have got to get away.

Everywhere that you turn,

there is a fight.

This is far from an ordinary day.

We are leaving to find a place

where it will be safe

for the children to go out and play.

Some of us have stayed

indoors so long that

we also have to get food.

I am starting to look like a waif.

We can start fresh

with a positive attitude,

optimistic and hopeful.

We can find some delicious

delicacies that will be a mouthful.

We can find our cheerful natures again

is what I truly pray.

Restore our energy,

feel safer in our next location,

find a new vocation

and live for a brand new day.

Sad that we have to think about our safety as we are in public. The recent shooting has made us aware of how much we need others to live peaceably among society.
