Poem: Forgiven

Updated on December 11, 2012
Source

I was inspired to write this poem about forgiveness from a relationship standpoint because there are many times when a significant other will say that he/she forgives you but during a disagreement the past is thrown in your face.

If you are going to truly forgive someone for whatever it is that he/she did wrong and choose to stay with that person then stop bringing up the past because that will not be healthy for your present or future.

You don't have to totally forget but pray for the strength to forgive and move forward without regret or remorse especially when you have chosen to try to make the relationship work successfully.

You say that I'm forgiven,

And the mistakes are gone away,

But when you get upset,

Those things resurface and get thrown in my face,

We are trying to move forward,

And that works for a little while,

The moment you feel aggravated,

Then all the past hurts and issues are placed on our present pile,

I've forgiven you time and time again,

With you I just can't seem to win,

So if we are to truly leave the past in the past,

Then let's work to make this relationship last,

Let's fall on our knees and pray,

To make the present and future a brand new day,

We may never forget,

We must learn to forgive,

Just as we are given the golden opportunity,

For each and every day that we live.

Hey there UMHiram. Very touching poem you've written here. I agree with you 100 percent. When we choose to forgive someone, we have to let go of whatever they done. Of course we will remember it because it will stick in our heads, but forgiveness means moving forward, and you can't do that if you're constantly bringing up what happened. Great great voted. Voted up and shared!

It is said that we are created in God's image. As omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent as the Creator is, He has a penchant for being forgetful. When we ask for forgiveness, our sins are forever drowned in the deepest of oceans, and He remembers them no more. If we could truly rise to the dignity of being re-created in His image on a daily basis, we may just have a fighting chance of forgiving ourselves and one another in line with that gracious Image. Thank you for expressing yourself beautifully with this lovely poem.
