Poem - I Am a Poet; Not a Performer

Updated on May 3, 2011

I Am a Poet; Not a Performer

So you are at a party and are introduced as a poet. And everyone looks at you....

I'm a poet
Not a performer
So I depart this stage
And sit next to you
I will be close
Perhaps uncomfortably so
But in order for us to interact
You must be willing to think
Deeply
Possibly painfully
About life
Or about yourself
And your situation
However it may be
Because when we part
You will be affected
Not by incredible showmanship
But by a quiet moment
You will be alone
With words
And though they are mine
They will soon become yours
Because you and I are the same
And as I draw you near
We will become one
Not as lovers
But as human beings
Who understand each other
Living together
With a feeling
Because you have become a poet too
And now I learn from you
And watch as you perform your magic
And wish I could write as you do
But that was my intention all along
And I hope you remember me
As I depart your stage
To continue as I was
Before we met

Shubey (ok I won't type the obligatory line that follows), thanks man... this is just addressing the whole idea of being a poet and the expectations one gets at times....

This is beautiful. Leaving a legacy is what life is all about. Every word and every feeling we let out into the world triggers a domino effect. And your poem has triggered a smile on my face, so thank you!

      Thanks for finding me! :D

@Midianite - thanks man... I appreciate it very much... you have to have an imagination and some empathy to write about life. You're right about analysis to fuel creativity... I just walk around and take things in s there is fertile ground everywhere for an erstwhile poet...

And you didn't fail to surprise me!

      Once again, amazing write.

I believe that poets tend to know more about those around them and themselves - purely because we use analysis to fuel our creativity.

@Ben - to say this is one of your favorites on HP is a huge compliment to say the least. I was trying to explain what it really means to be a poet because I was somewhat in this position at a high school reunion. I'd posted some of my stuff on Facebook to general applause but then everyone wanted to know when I started writing and what was up? I didn't want to be so prententious by calling myself a poet even though on the inside I felt that this was my ambition even if I had not quite achieved it just yet. So then people that new me long ago were sort of checking me out you know and were curious as to what I might say or do and the idea that "I'm not a performer" came to mind....

      Nellianan,

That's better than I would have described it... I knew you were praising my work but you brought up the "G" word... whoa!

Oh, - I meant transparent in a most positive and praising way. To be able to transparently transmit one's authenticity borders on sheer genius. Of course, sometimes the opacity of others' minds prevents the transference of it, but yours may even be capable of bypassing that possibility! I certainly hope so.

      Thank you Uriel,

I'm sure you are a poet... I'll check out your hubs but if I can call myself a poet then by all means you have the same latitude....

That would be a question for the group (if not previously asked and explored):

What does it take to be considered a true poet?

Thank you for this piece of work:D I love your style easy and simple yet always remarkable!

WE the poets feel what the world holds precious (i like to consider myself a poet:P

      b. Malin,

Yes... I was just thinking that as I poured another cup of coffee... I'm walking in a dreamlike state while effortlessly tending to my responsibilities... I wonder if people around me notice or if I am able to give them what they need while simultaneously existing a thousand miles away...

      Nellieanna,

That is a very nice thing to say; transparency can be used in different contexts; good (like a government that is supposed to be transparent!) or bad (obvious, shallow)... I can only be myself and anything more would be transparently false...

So true, Suburban Poet, so true...I enjoyed this piece, could really relate...I wake up with "thoughts" dancing in my head that need to be said. We Poets live in such a wonderful state of imagination.

You're transparent in the sense that light is transparent. But so much more, as is light.

      Aweli,

They say if you can reach even just one person that you have succeeded. I hope you can find the same enjoyment that I have. It's become something that I think about all the time; even while I sleep. I awaken with the words in my head and I happy that it is what I've become...

      Hi Suburban Poet,

I really never care much about listening, reading or righting poets before. Tonight, after I red some of your poems, I interested it and encouraged me to think righting about it.

However, I voted for you up and I am very glad to be your follower. If you become my follower, I would highly appreciate.

      Thank you,
