The Ugly Meter App

Feeling ugly—all the time, sometimes, never? Statistics show that not many people feel beautiful. In fact, one survey done among UK and American girls show that 77 percent feel that they’re ugly. And who can blame them? The media would have us believe that thin and slim is perennially in and desirable. The commercials on TV tell us we need shiny hair, bright teeth or the flawless complexion to feel beautiful. Bombarded daily by countless images of perfection (did we slow down to remember that most are digitally enhanced and airbrushed?), ugly can become real when you make the comparison.

If you’re feeling ugly and you don’t need any more reminders. Here’s one that will put ugly in its perspective. Recently, there is a smartphone app that you can purchase for just 99 cents that can gauge your level of ugliness. Named “The Ugly Meter,” it will analyze a picture of you or any object and give you a rating. 10 means ugly, as ugly as it can get and 0 means very attractive. It also delivers an insult or a compliment, depending on the level of ugliness.

If there’s any consolation to those of us feeling not quite beautiful, here’s what the The Ugly Meter thought of two extremes of male attractiveness:

Brad Pitt scored a whopping 10: As ugly as it can get

Howard Stern: 0.0—way too sexy

If you’re thinking what I’m thinking—that the rating is laughable—then, it goes to show that ugly can be beautiful—it’s all in the eyes of the beholder (glad the adage still stands).

If you’re still feeling ugly, there are options. There are many beauty aids and procedures that can help in this department. Then, there's another option that is free and totally attainable---cultivating inner beauty . Ok, it may sounds all too naïve and idealistic but if you think about it—it’s the one quality that ultimately endures—even old age can’t age that.

The flower outside my window reminds me of this all over again--that true beauty shines. The joy, love, compassion, the genuine interest and care you have for people around you, the sense of humor and wonder will shine through and make you truly beautiful.

Outside my window

Softness glows

Lit from within

Above chaos and din

An attitude so pure

Bold yet demure

It doesn’t demand

It doesn’t command

It’s no attention hoarder

Just a quiet reminder

That true beauty shines

From an inner place

A higher expression of grace.

True beauty runs deep--it sprouts from an inner glow. If that's the case, you can be as beautiful as you aspires....even without beauty aids. Still, there will be days when you feel ugly--if that's the case, here are some beauty quotes:

Beauty is not in the face;
beauty is a light in the heart. ~ Khalil Gibran

People are like stained glass windows: they sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light within.~Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

There is certainly no absolute standard of beauty. That precisely is what makes its pursuit so interesting.~ John Kenneth Galbraith

A person is only beautiful, when their own beauty, is reflecting on to others.~ Tara Grady

Life is too short to spend hoping that the perfectly arched eyebrow or hottest new lip shade will mask an ugly heart. ~ Kevyn Aucioin

Ugly. Is irrelevant. It is an immeasurable insult to a woman, and then supposedly the worst crime you can commit as a woman. But ugly, as beautiful, is an illusion. ~ Margaret Cho

What would be ugly in a garden constitutes beauty in a mountain.~ Victor Hugo
